13-Year-Old Shark Attack Survivor Shares Extraordinary Journey of Resilience and Faith

Three years ago, a 10-year-old boy faced a life-changing shark attack that resulted in the loss of his right leg below the knee. Now 13, Jameson Reeder Jr. is bravely recounting his harrowing experience and the miraculous series of events that followed.

In August 2022, Jameson was with his family nine miles offshore at Looe Key Reef in the Florida Keys. Armed with a GoPro camera, he eagerly went underwater, hoping to catch glimpses of turtles and other marine life. The day turned tragic when he unexpectedly encountered a bull shark, estimated to be at least eight feet long, just after spotting a sea turtle.

The Moment of Horror

Jameson’s father, Jameson Reeder Sr., was resurfacing to inform Jameson’s younger brother, Nehemiah, about the underwater sights when he heard a chilling scream from his son.

“When we got Jameson back onto the boat, we saw the unimaginable damage,” said Jameson Sr. “He had been viciously attacked by a massive shark that seemed to appear out of nowhere. It was hunting.”

Describing the Attack

In recalling the traumatic moment, Jameson Jr. said, “Once it attacked me, I didn’t think of anything else except what the heck is attacking me.” The shark grabbed him and shook him violently, making it difficult for him to comprehend the danger.

“I jerked my head back into place and started screaming for help,” he added.

As panic ensued, Jameson Sr. held his bleeding son close, his heart racing as he realized the gravity of the situation.

Desperate Measures

“Jameson’s leg below the knee was essentially gone,” recounts his father. “The fibula, the outer bone, was completely missing, with only the tibia left, marked with sharp teeth impressions.”

In a twist of fate, a nearby boat, the fastest on the reef, offered its services to race Jameson back to shore. Miraculously, a nurse appeared out of the water, jumping aboard with a medical bag to assist the injured boy.

“You don’t expect to meet a nurse in the middle of the ocean,” said Jameson Sr. The timely arrival of assistance marked the beginning of a series of miraculous events.

A Spiritual Encounter

Among the most profound aspects of Jameson Jr.’s story is his unwavering faith. He believed that Jesus would save him through this traumatic ordeal.

Jameson described seeing “a man on fire” during his boat ride to shore. “When the fire cleared, it was actually Jesus,” he recounted, explaining how the figure gave him a sense of peace amidst the chaos.

Jameson Jr. sang the worship song “Here I Am to Worship,” using it to keep himself awake during the agonizing journey to safety.

Path to Recovery

Following the attack, Jameson Jr. spent three weeks in the hospital, undergoing four surgeries. Although he faces the prospect of additional procedures as he continues to grow, his spirit remains undaunted.

The resilient teenager refuses to let his injury hinder his zest for life. “I surf, I play baseball, and I try rock climbing whenever I can. I also play electric guitar and sing,” he shared.

Facing Fears

Remarkably, Jameson has revisited the site of his traumatic encounter, demonstrating incredible bravery and determination. “The Lord gave me the strength to go back to the reef,” he stated. He enjoyed swimming with friends and family, proving that fear does not have to dictate his life.

Surprisingly, he has developed a newfound appreciation for sharks, featuring their image on his prosthetic leg. “I want to go shark diving one day—with no cage,” he exclaimed, reflecting his remarkable transformation.

A Family’s Journey

The Reeder family plans to return to the reef later this month, marking the anniversary of the shark attack. This return symbolizes resilience, hope, and gratitude as they embrace life after tragedy.

Jameson’s inspiring story encapsulates a journey of survival, faith, and the power of community support during the darkest of times. His courageous spirit serves as a reminder that life can be rebuilt, even after devastating experiences.

As the Reeder family continues to heal and move forward, they hope to inspire others to find strength in faith and resilience, no matter the challenges they face.
