Saquon Barkley Declines Trump’s Council Position on Sports and Nutrition

In a recent announcement, Philadelphia Eagles star Saquon Barkley confirmed he has declined President Donald Trump’s invitation to join the Council on Sports, Fitness, and Nutrition. During a press briefing at training camp, Barkley clarified his stance.

On July 31, Trump signed an executive order that reestablished the council along with the Presidential Fitness Test. The move aims to tackle the growing concerns surrounding declining health and physical fitness among Americans, using a traditional approach that celebrates America’s sports and fitness heritage.

At the signing ceremony, several notable athletes attended, including New York Giants legend Lawrence Taylor and Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker. These figures joined Trump in promoting the council’s agenda.

According to the announcement, Barkley was named as one of the council members, alongside NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, San Francisco 49ers defensive end Nick Bosa, Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, and Butker.

Addressing reporters, Barkley expressed surprise at being mentioned for this role. “A couple of months ago, my team was informed about the council, but I’m not very familiar with it,” said Barkley. He continued, “Given my busy schedule, my family and I believed it was in our best interest not to accept the invitation. Although I appreciate being considered, I was a little shocked when my name was brought up.”

Overview of the Council’s Goals

The reestablished council now carries a significant responsibility. It aims to provide guidance and formulate strategies related to the Presidential Fitness Test and broader initiatives focused on improving youth fitness in America. This comes at a time when physical health among children is a growing concern.

A prominent figure present at the executive order signing was Bryson DeChambeau, a LIV Golf star who is set to chair the council. He emphasized their mission, stating, “With the 70th anniversary of the President’s Council on Sports, Fitness and Nutrition at our fingertips, we have a chance to change children’s lives. Our initial initiative is to revive the president’s fitness test while implementing key guidelines to enhance community health.”

A Historical Perspective

The President’s Council on Youth Fitness originated in 1956 under President Dwight D. Eisenhower, and the Presidential Physical Fitness Award was created in 1966 by President Lyndon B. Johnson. Originally, the fitness test required children to engage in various physical activities, including running, sit-ups, pull-ups, and a sit-and-reach test.

However, the Presidential Fitness Test was discontinued during the administration of President Barack Obama, who established the Presidential Youth Fitness Program instead.

Current Reformation Efforts

In reintroducing the council and fitness test, the current administration aims to restore a culture of competition and commitment to both nutrition and physical fitness among American youth. Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy remarked on the importance of this initiative, stating the need to revitalize that spirit.

Barkley’s Recent Accomplishments

Saquon Barkley has much on his plate, particularly after leading the Eagles to capture the Vince Lombardi Trophy during the 2024 NFL season. Following a standout year in which he gained 2,005 rushing yards and accumulated a total of 2,283 scrimmage yards along with 15 touchdowns, he earned the title of Offensive Player of the Year and received First Team All-Pro honors, marking his third appearance at the Pro Bowl.

Despite the busy offseason, Barkley has faced scrutiny for his social interactions with Trump. Earlier this year, they were spotted golfing at Trump’s Bedminster, New Jersey, golf course, a sight that raised eyebrows given the current political climate.

Barkley addressed critics on social media, stating, “Some people are really upset because I played golf and flew to the White House with the president. Perhaps I just respect the office, which is not a difficult concept to comprehend. I recently enjoyed golfing with Obama as well and look forward to finishing my round with Trump. Now please, step away from my mentions with the politics and have a fantastic day.”

Trump has publicly expressed admiration for Barkley, referring to him as a “nice guy” and joking about wanting to race him.

Future Focus

Looking ahead, Barkley’s primary focus is on his performance in the upcoming season as he aims to defend the NFL title. After achieving remarkable statistics during his last campaign, expectations remain high for the talented running back as he continues to innovate on the field. With the reestablished council playing a pivotal role in promoting health and fitness nationwide, Barkley’s contributions—whether on or off the field—will undoubtedly remain in the spotlight.

As Barkley navigates his career, his decision regarding Trump’s council invites ongoing discussion about athletes’ roles in public health initiatives and the impact of sports in addressing wider societal issues.
