Texas Soldier Charged with Espionage for Attempting to Pass Military Secrets to Russia

A U.S. Army soldier stationed in Texas faces serious charges for allegedly attempting to transfer sensitive military information about the M1A2 Abrams tank to a foreign adversary in exchange for Russian citizenship.

Taylor Adam Lee, aged 22, was arrested on Wednesday by federal authorities. He faces charges of attempted transmission of national defense information to a foreign entity and the attempted export of controlled technical data without a proper license.

Details of the Arrest and Charges

According to federal prosecutors, Lee believed he was in contact with a Russian intelligence officer when he attempted to provide the sensitive information. This interaction reportedly occurred while Lee was stationed at Fort Bliss in El Paso, where he held a Top Secret/Sensitive Compartmented Information (TS/SCI) clearance.

The allegations suggest that in June, Lee transmitted detailed information about the M1A2 Abrams tank through online communications. He indicated a willingness to help Russia, saying, “The USA is not happy with me for trying to expose their weaknesses.”

Lee allegedly went further, expressing a desire to assist the Russian Federation while he was there.

Passing Sensitive Data

In July, Lee met with an individual he believed to be a Russian government operative. During this meeting, he reportedly handed over an SD card containing critical documents and information related to the Abrams battle tank, as well as other military vehicles and combat operations.

Prosecutors highlighted that several items on the SD card included technical data that Lee was not authorized to share. Some documents were marked as Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI) and bore warning labels regarding their dissemination.

The FBI’s Counterintelligence Division also reacted strongly to Lee’s arrest.
