Former UFC fighter Ben Askren has opened up about his newfound faith after emerging from a medically induced coma and undergoing a crucial double lung transplant. His dramatic journey follows a severe battle with pneumonia that nearly cost him his life.
In a recent interview with FloWrestling, Askren detailed his transformative experience that led him to Christianity. He described waking up from the coma with a profound sense of purpose.
Askren recalled moments during his hospitalization when doctors believed he might not survive. He said, “There were multiple times where they thought I was dead. Like I was dead, that’s the other side. I woke up and I just decided I was a Christian. So, that’s crazy.”
This revelation came as a surprise to many, especially as Askren admitted he attended church for 15 years with his wife without fully embracing the faith. He explained, “I went with my wife to church for 15 years because that was part of the deal. I said, ‘Well, I’m not Christian, but I’ll support you.’ And it was really weird when I woke up, I’m like ‘I gotta do it.’ You know? So, that was kind of weird.”
Askren expressed immense gratitude for the support he received during his illness. He mentioned how friends and family rallied around him, showing kindness through financial donations, caring for his children, and providing meals.
His medical ordeal began in May when he first experienced back pain, which later escalated into a serious lung condition. By June, he found himself on a ventilator and was placed on the organ transplant list on June 24.
Fortunately, the double lung transplant surgery was a success, and Askren has been actively updating his fans on his recovery journey via social media. In his latest message, he shared his progress, stating he completed nearly three laps around the hospital floor, a testament to his resilience and determination.
“Making some good progress. Hope you guys are doing the same with your lives,” he added, inspiring many with his positive outlook.
Ben Askren is no stranger to competition and accolades. At 40 years old, he achieved great success as an NCAA champion in the 170-pound division in both 2006 and 2007. Moreover, he represented the United States at the 2008 Olympics and earned gold medals at prestigious events such as the 2005 Pan American Championships and the 2009 World Championships.
Transitioning into mixed martial arts (MMA), Askren made his debut in Bellator in 2010. He later fought in ONE Championship before joining the UFC. One of the memorable moments of his career includes facing Jake Paul in a boxing match in 2021, although he was knocked out in the first round.
Throughout his recovery, Askren has underscored the importance of community and faith. His experience has encouraged him to embrace gratitude and live a life guided by his new beliefs. This transition is not only about personal faith but also about the collective effort that surrounded him during his health crisis.
He encouraged others to reflect on their support systems and the role of faith in overcoming adversity. Askren’s journey spotlights how life’s challenges can lead to profound changes in perspective.
