The Department of Homeland Security recently stirred controversy with an AI-generated image of an ICE-sponsored IndyCar, capturing the attention of IndyCar officials and one of its prominent drivers.
The post, titled “Speedway Slammer,” showcased a jailhouse set against the backdrop of a racing track, raising eyebrows within the racing community.
The image featured a car numbered 5, matching the vehicle driven by Pato O’Ward, a talented 26-year-old driver from Monterrey, Mexico.
Pato O’Ward expressed his surprise at the unexpected association. “It caught a lot of people off guard. Definitely caught me off guard,” he stated on Wednesday. “I was just a little bit shocked at the coincidences of that and, you know, of what it means. … I don’t think it made a lot of people proud, to say the least.”
IndyCar reacted swiftly, issuing a statement that noted they had not been informed about the use of their imagery in the announcement. “We were unaware of plans to incorporate our imagery as part of yesterday’s announcement,” the statement read. “Consistent with our approach to public policy and political issues, we are communicating our preference that our intellectual property not be utilized moving forward in relation to this matter.”
O’Ward mentioned that he only learned about the post after a friend reached out to him. “I haven’t really read into it too much because I don’t think I want to,” he added, indicating a desire to distance himself from the situation.
