Imagine witnessing your worst fears manifesting before your eyes. You watch your child struggle for life, appearing frail and tormented. You hear their cries for help echoing in your ears as you stand paralyzed, unable to offer any relief. How does a parent bear such a sight? How can one find solace when helplessness takes over?
As a father, I can attest that the feelings are incomprehensible. The anguish drives you to the brink of madness and creates a relentless ache. The deep sense of powerlessness becomes unbearable, and the horror remains with you, haunting your every thought.
My son, Rom Braslavski, is currently trapped in a nightmare. At just 22 years old, he has been a captive of Islamic Jihad in Gaza for 670 days. To say Rom is suffering is an understatement. I, too, am enduring my own version of hell.
On October 7, 2023, a day that will forever be marked as one of the darkest in Israel’s history, Rom was a security guard at the Nova music festival. When terrorists launched their brutal attack, many would consider fleeing to save their own lives. However, Rom chose to stay back. He opted to remain at his post, prioritizing the safety of others. He worked tirelessly to treat the injured, evacuate those in danger, and instill dignity amid chaos.
Recently, Islamic Jihad shared a deeply disturbing propaganda video that shattered my already fragile heart. In that footage, I saw Rom, nearly at the brink of death, begging for help. His appearance was unrecognizable, emaciated and stricken with despair. Where once there was strength in his spirit, all that remains is a hollow shell. This was the first time I had seen my son truly break down.
Four months prior, Islamic Jihad had released another video featuring Rom. Even then, he looked unwell but still held a glimmer of hope in his eyes—a hope that feels extinguished in the latest footage. He appears to be waiting for death, and as a father, I am forced to watch my child die before my very eyes.
Rom has always been a source of strength—someone who brings security and comfort to those around him. Yet now, the boy I raised is barely recognizable. The relentless psychological and physical torture he has endured has changed him profoundly. The transformation is devastating.
The terrorists holding my son claim that they provide hostages with food comparable to what their fighters receive. However, the video clearly depicts the stark contrast: the captors appear well-nourished while Rom is deliberately starving. This suffering is inflicted upon him with calculated cruelty.
In my plea, I address you directly, Mr. President Trump. I approach not as a political figure but as a father seeking urgent action. You understand the profound responsibilities of protecting family, having demonstrated strength when others falter. You possess the moral clarity needed to recognize the evil present in this situation.
With that understanding, I implore you to utilize your influence, power, and leadership to demand the immediate release of all 50 hostages still held in Gaza.
This crisis reaches beyond Israeli borders; it serves as a grave test of our collective humanity. The attacks on October 7 were not just acts of terror. They represented a full-out assault on civilization itself.
Mr. President, my son cannot afford to wait. Each passing day without decisive action could be his last. Time is slipping away as we seek nourishment and medical assistance for him. We must rescue him from this hell.
All hostages deserve a return to safety. We need a singular, uncompromising deal—a resolution without phases or conditions. Silence will not bring them back to life.
Please do not let the light in Rom’s eyes extinguish forever. Act now and help bring my son and his fellow captives home.
