New York Governor Kathy Hochul, who previously served as lieutenant governor under Andrew Cuomo, revealed on Sunday that she has discovered significant “areas of alignment” with Zohran Mamdani, the democratic socialist leading the race for New York City mayor.
While appearing on “Fox News Sunday,” host Shannon Bream inquired about Hochul’s support for Mamdani, especially after he praised her handling of Texas Democratic lawmakers who fled their state to obstruct a Republican redistricting plan.
Hochul responded, acknowledging their differences but asserting that both candidates share common values. She stated, “We still have many differences. I don’t know how you whitewash that away. He can agree with me, and many people agree with, and I think it’s not just Democrats who say New Yorkers stand up for our rights. We do that. It’s what we’re hardwired to do. We’re fighters. I’m a mom from Buffalo. I guess they’re not used to taking on a mom from Buffalo, perhaps.”
CUOMO’S SUPPORTERS TARGET MAMDANI IN STRATEGIC MOVE
Continuing her remarks, Hochul indicated that their views align on critical issues, particularly focusing on affordability. “There’s many areas of disagreement, but also there’s areas of alignment, including affordability,” she stated. “His election touched a nerve. And people said, you know what, we’re just not getting ahead. And the Trump policies that were promised to lift people up, reduce costs, not touch Medicaid, make sure that tariffs create jobs, none of that happened. So there is this sense of we need some change now.”
Hochul emphasized her commitment to collaborating with the elected mayor, regardless of who that may be. She affirmed her intention to work with whoever the voters choose. “I’ve worked with two different mayors of New York City already, and I’ll continue to make it work,” she noted.
HOCHUL’S POSITION ON ENDORSING MAMDANI REMAINS UNCLEAR
When further pressed about a potential endorsement for Mamdani, Hochul maintained a cautious stance. “I will make it work out because I’m not going to go to war with the 8 million residents of New York that I also represent, so my job is to calm things down,” she explained. “Let’s see what the election results are, but people have to recognize that candidate for mayor has also touched a nerve and we need to be responsive to that. So I’m aligned with him that we need to start finding ways to make life more affordable for New Yorkers.”
Hochul became governor after Cuomo resigned amid several controversies and subsequently won a full term. Her political maneuvering comes at a critical juncture as Mamdani, who triumphed in the June Democratic primary over Cuomo, is challenging the incumbent New York City Mayor Eric Adams in the general election.
In their rivalry, Adams and Cuomo have exchanged critical remarks, questioning which of them should withdraw from the race to improve the likelihood of a Mamdani defeat.
This political landscape highlights Hochul’s balancing act in navigating complex relationships with varied factions as she seeks to address pressing issues faced by New Yorkers.
The dynamics of Hochul’s administration will undoubtedly evolve in response to the outcomes of the upcoming mayoral race. Political observers are keen to see whether her attempts to align with Mamdani will resonate with voters or create divisions within her own party. Furthermore, her insights into affordability resonate with a populace increasingly burdened by economic pressures.
The electoral landscape in New York City is poised for transformation as candidates identify the core issues affecting constituents. Hochul’s willingness to engage with diverse political perspectives may either bolster her position or complicate her governance, depending on the electoral results.
As Hochul navigates these intricate political waters, her ability to maintain unity within her party while addressing the needs of all New Yorkers will be crucial moving forward. Her actions in the coming weeks could set a tone for the future of New York’s political landscape, underscoring the importance of collaboration, dialogue, and responsiveness to the electorate’s desires.
