A grieving mother has expressed her support for President Donald Trump’s initiative to enhance public safety in Washington, D.C., following the tragic loss of her 21-year-old son in a senseless shooting.
On Monday, President Trump outlined his plans to assume direct control over public safety measures in the capital. This announcement includes activating the District of Columbia National Guard and assuming authority over the Metropolitan Police Department.
Tamara Tarpinian-Jachym, whose son Eric was tragically killed in a drive-by shooting while serving as a congressional intern in June, stated that the President’s commitment to making D.C. safe again is highly commendable.
“When I heard the news today, and he mentioned my son, not by name, but referenced others who have been victims of violent crime, I was filled with emotion. I looked at Eric’s ashes and thought, ‘Eric, you haven’t died in vain.’ I believe things will change so that visitors and workers in D.C. can feel safe,” she shared during an interview on Monday.
Tamara’s Fears and the Quest for Justice
Tamara explained that surveillance footage from the scene of her son’s murder exists, but much of it is grainy and unhelpful. Furthermore, she recalled moments of fear expressed by taxi drivers when she was in D.C. to identify her son’s body, indicating the area’s dangers, especially at night.
As of now, law enforcement has not made any arrests in the case related to Eric Tarpinian-Jachym’s killing. In July, President Trump reached out to Eric’s parents, expressing his condolences in a heartfelt letter. The President, alongside First Lady Melania Trump, conveyed their shared heartbreak over the loss.
“While we may never fully grasp the extent of Eric’s impact during his meaningful life, we know he will be remembered for his heartfelt kindness and devotion to family and friends,” the letter stated. “He will also be honored for his commitment to our nation. I know Congressman Estes was proud to have Eric represent his office and the people of Kansas’ Fourth Congressional District.”

Tamara continues to seek answers about the tragic circumstances surrounding her son’s death. With much uncertainty clouding the investigation, she expressed her frustration.
“I know nothing about the specifics of what happened. I only know about what’s on the death certificate, which mentions several bullet wounds. I can speculate, but that doesn’t bring clarity. Perhaps it’s for the best that I don’t know the details, as it might help authorities catch the perpetrators,” she reflected.
The grieving mother has shown support for Judge Jeanine Pirro, the newly appointed U.S. attorney for the District of Columbia, highlighting her commitment to victims’ rights. Tamara expressed her desire to see swift justice for those responsible for her son’s death.
“Judge Pirro doesn’t shy away from the truth. She is an advocate for victims, and I trust her determination in this case,” Tamara added. “She told me it would take time, but I have faith in her commitment.”
The Importance of Safety for D.C. Interns
Tamara emphasized the need for safety in the city, especially for interns who come to D.C. from other parts of the country. Many of these young individuals are unaware of the city’s hidden dangers.
“Interns often come to D.C. thinking it’s a safe place. They have no idea how serious the issues are. It feels like a well-kept secret,” she noted.

“People should be able to walk freely in the city without the fear of being shot, mugged, or attacked,” she stated. “That is the goal we all share—creating a safer place for future generations.”
