Packers Rookie Matthew Golden Celebrates Family Heritage with Grand Gesture

In a heartwarming turn of events, Matthew Golden not only realized his childhood dream of being drafted into the NFL but also accomplished a deeply personal goal. In April, Golden’s name was called during the 2025 NFL Draft, marking the beginning of his professional football career with the Green Bay Packers.

Ranked as the 23rd pick overall, Golden became the first wide receiver selected in the first round for the Packers since 2002. His selection was met with enthusiastic applause, echoing through the atmosphere surrounding Lambeau Field, where the fans’ passionate support was palpable.

Golden expressed his appreciation for Packer fans, noting their genuine excitement and love for the team. He remarked, “It was a crazy atmosphere. The fans in general — it’s different in Green Bay. Packer fans, they’re so genuine, and they really love Green Bay. I can tell by the energy at practice. It’s a cool place to be and kind of makes me want to practice. They’re out there at practice giving us juice and energy. It’s really cool.” This enthusiasm fuels not only the team but also Golden’s determination to excel.

A Grueling Offseason

Golden’s offseason has been a whirlwind. After a successful final season at Texas that concluded in the College Football Playoff semifinals, he immediately shifted his focus to preparing for the NFL Draft. Rookie camp, OTAs, and minicamps followed in rapid succession, leading up to the intense training camp. He has been in relentless preparation mode for nearly a year.

Despite the rigorous schedule, Golden knew it was all part of his journey. He reflected, “It’s everything I dreamed of as a kid, was to be able to make it to the NFL, go to the draft… I felt like the whole process, I definitely took it in and enjoyed it. Now I’m at a great organization where I can just play football and have fun.”

A Promise Fulfilled

However, getting drafted was not his most significant achievement. Golden spoke about a promise he made to himself during his childhood — a promise that revolved around supporting his family. When he was just 12 years old, Golden and his family lost their home, which belonged to his grandmother. This experience left a lasting imprint on him.

Golden’s goal was clear. He wanted to give back to his family by reclaiming what they had lost. Shortly after being drafted, he announced his intention to buy his grandmother a new house. Although he could not purchase the exact property due to its current condition, he found a nearby residence in Houston, with the assistance of RE/MAX.

“It was great. Just seeing the look on my grandma’s face when I told her the house was hers, she had a lot of emotions, man. It was a cool moment for me,” Golden recounted, showcasing his deep connection with his family.
