EXCLUSIVE ON FOX: A Republican senator is urging the Justice Department to scrutinize alleged financial support provided to Texas Democrats for their recent departure from the state. This move raises questions about the legality of political funding in light of ongoing redistricting efforts.
Senator John Cornyn, a Texas Republican, has formally requested Attorney General Pam Bondi to launch an investigation into potential violations of federal public corruption and election laws by political action committees linked to Beto O’Rourke and financier George Soros. Cornyn’s concerns center around the funding used to assist Texas state legislators in evading a special session convened by Governor Greg Abbott aimed at redrawing district maps.
In a letter obtained by Fox News Digital, Cornyn wrote, “I write today to encourage an investigation of the entities funding this charade.” He further stated that news reports indicate that PACs associated with O’Rourke and notable donors like George Soros are providing substantial support to the fleeing lawmakers and their associated campaign activities.
The exodus of Texas Democrats was strategic, aiming to thwart a special session called by Governor Abbott that seeks to finalize the state’s congressional district maps. By leaving, the legislators aimed to disrupt the quorum needed to pass the proposed legislation.
Cornyn’s request for an investigation follows an earlier appeal to FBI Director Kash Patel to assist in locating the missing legislators. Subsequent reports from the Texas Tribune revealed that O’Rourke’s PAC has played a significant role in funding the departure of approximately 50 Democrats. This support includes covering expenses such as airfare, accommodation, and even daily fines of $500 incurred for their no-shows during legislative sessions.
Additionally, the Texas Majority PAC, associated with Soros, is reportedly collaborating with national fundraising groups to secure extra funds for these legislators.
Efforts to obtain comments from the involved organizations were unsuccessful.

Meanwhile, on Tuesday night, the Texas state Senate advanced the new congressional maps while the missing House Democrats reportedly prepared to return. The House now faces a critical vote on the redistricting changes necessary for them to become law. Although the special session is expected to conclude next Tuesday, Governor Abbott has indicated a willingness to call another session if the Democrats continue their opposition tactics.
Cornyn emphasized that if legislators accepted funds or gifts in exchange for obstructing a quorum call, they could be implicated in honest services fraud or Hobbs Act extortion. He noted that crossing state lines could further complicate matters, potentially violating the federal Travel Act if there was intent to break either federal or state laws.
He asserted, “At a minimum, it appears likely that Texas state bribery and corruption laws may have been broken” by the legislators accepting benefits and by the groups associated with O’Rourke and Soros that allegedly provided these controversial funds.
Cornyn also mentioned that O’Rourke’s organization may have breached federal campaign finance laws by improperly using campaign funds. He stated that such expenditures could encompass personal uses, including lodging and travel unrelated to legitimate electioneering activities.
Consequently, Cornyn urged for a thorough examination by the Federal Election Commission into the sources of funding for the special interest groups and PACs involved with the House members’ actions. Such scrutiny is essential to ensure adherence to all applicable federal laws and regulations.

Cornyn’s calls for investigation resonate with previous requests made by Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton. Both are embroiled in a contentious primary race for the Republican nomination for Senate in Texas.
On Tuesday, Paxton took it a step further, asking a Texas district judge to jail O’Rourke over allegations of violating a court order issued the previous week. This order prohibited fundraising efforts intended to support the Texas Democrats’ campaign to derail the redistricting process.
Cornyn pointed out the broader implications of the legislators’ flight, noting that it not only obstructed the redistricting effort but also hindered legislation aimed at providing assistance to victims of recent devastating floods in Texas.
“The special session will end in a matter of days, at which point assistance to flood victims and other necessary measures will remain unaddressed,” Cornyn emphasized. “The absconding House members’ dereliction of duty is truly shameful.”
