The Kennedy Center Honors are generating significant excitement in 2023, with Hollywood stars at the center of the discussions.
On Wednesday, President Donald Trump unveiled the list of talented individuals poised to be celebrated at the prestigious ceremony scheduled for December.
This year’s honorees include country music legend George Strait, beloved Hollywood actor Sylvester Stallone, the iconic rock band KISS, celebrated English actor Michael Crawford, and the legendary singer Gloria Gaynor, celebrated for her classic hits such as ‘I Will Survive’ and ‘The Eye of the Tiger.’
Trump’s role as chairman of the Kennedy Center marks a new direction for the honors program, emphasizing a more extravagant and star-studded celebration.
In his remarks, Trump expressed enthusiasm for the honorees, stating, “The 48th Kennedy Center Honorees are outstanding individuals. We are excited… within just a few months since I became chairman, we have completely reversed the decline of this cherished national institution.”
When questioned about his involvement in determining the 2025 honorees, Trump was candid.
He stated, “I was about 98% involved… they all came through me,” showcasing his hands-on approach to the selection process.
Trump clarified that he personally approved each honoree and shared that some nominees did not meet his criteria.
He remarked, “I turned down plenty; they were too woke… I had a couple of wokesters. No, we have great people. This is very different than it used to be.”
Trump took the opportunity to critique the current state of Hollywood awards shows, particularly targeting the Oscars.
He commented, “Look at the Academy Awards — it receives poor ratings now, and it is all woke. All they do is talk about how much they dislike Trump, but nobody is interested in that. Viewership has plummeted.”
He concluded his lengthy explanation by reiterating his significant involvement in the selection of the Kennedy Center Honorees.
Fans eager to visit the Kennedy Center’s official website encountered an unexpected message, stating, “You are currently in a temporary waiting room.” This occurred as the site experienced a surge in traffic following Trump’s announcement of the honorees.
The message further clarified, “We are experiencing high traffic. You are currently in a temporary waiting room to enter the Kennedy Center website.” Visitors were informed that they would be redirected to the main site as demand subsided.
As of the publication time, more than 300 users were reportedly in line.
In previous comments to Fox News Digital, Trump indicated his commitment to revitalizing the Kennedy Center, stating, “The Kennedy Center is making a comeback. It was not appropriately cared for, and we are reclaiming it to turn it back into something magnificent.”
Sources revealed that Trump is dedicated to enhancing the Kennedy Center, with discussions suggesting the possibility of renaming it ‘the Trump-Kennedy Center.’
The Kennedy Center comprises two affiliates: the National Symphony Orchestra and the Washington National Opera. The newly appointed leadership team is working on business strategies with these affiliates to ensure that the Kennedy Center secures larger endowments and enhances its financial sustainability.
Earlier this year, in February, Trump appointed himself as chairman of the Kennedy Center, also displacing several board members from their positions.
At that time, he remarked that his vision for a Golden Age in arts and culture differed significantly from that of the former chair, David Rubenstein.
He also expressed dissatisfaction with the prior programming, highlighting concerns about performances aimed at youth. Trump’s statement on Truth Social noted, “Just last year, the Kennedy Center featured Drag Shows specifically targeting our youth — THIS WILL STOP.”
The Kennedy Center’s opera house is a prominent venue, being the second-largest theater within the complex, boasting 2,347 seats.
Moreover, it serves as the venue for the annual Kennedy Center Honors, widely regarded as the country’s highest accolade for lifetime achievement in the arts.
This year’s restructuring and selection processes mark a significant pivot in the Kennedy Center’s direction, aiming to rejuvenate its image within the arts community.
