Mamdani Highlights Bronx Population Decline to Illustrate NYC’s Affordability Crisis

New York City’s Democratic mayoral nominee Zohran Mamdani took his message to the Bronx on Thursday, marking the fourth day of his “Five Boroughs Against Trump” tour. Mamdani is determined to demonstrate how former President Donald Trump’s administration is adversely affecting small businesses in the city.

During his visit, Mamdani addressed the crowd, stating, “We are here today on the fourth stop of our five borough tour to speak about how Bronx residents cannot afford the city they call home.” This sentiment resonates with many locals who struggle with the high cost of living. Mamdani pointed out a troubling statistic, revealing that from 2020 to 2022, the Bronx saw a population decline of 6.3%. This decrease represents the highest drop among all New York City boroughs. He emphasized, “People are leaving this city because it is too expensive. We are the most expensive city in the United States.”

Throughout the week, Mamdani has made a concerted effort to link Trump with his primary rival in the race, former Governor Andrew Cuomo. After losing the Democratic primary to Mamdani in June, Cuomo is now campaigning as an independent candidate.

On Thursday, Mamdani visited Nohble, a local business in the Bronx. He reiterated that both Trump and Cuomo have historically allocated “tax breaks to billionaires and megacorporations.” In contrast, Mamdani aims to prioritize affordability as the cornerstone of his campaign’s agenda.

Trump’s recent legislation, dubbed the “big, beautiful bill,” has sparked considerable applause among Republicans. Democrats, however, have been quick to critique the bill. Many claim it disproportionately favors the wealthy while reducing benefits for vulnerable populations. This messaging is particularly significant as the Democratic Party prepares for midterm elections projected to be competitive in 2026.

In response to Trump’s tax legislation, critics have pointed to troubling predictions from the Congressional Budget Office. They estimate that as a consequence of Trump’s mega-bill, about 10 million additional people will lack insurance by 2034.

Mamdani also criticized Cuomo’s track record during his time as governor. This includes offering $3 billion in tax breaks for the controversial Amazon HQ2 project in Queens. Additionally, Mamdani noted Cuomo’s expansion of $420 million in film industry credits and the establishment of
