Because, yes, home is a beautiful space. But it’s also, ‘What are you eating? What are you smelling?’ Food has so much power.”

A New Chapter for Her Family

As her children approach adulthood, Gaines reveals an evolution in her family dynamics. With her oldest kids becoming increasingly independent, she acknowledges, “My kids are all now in the season of life where they’re closer to leaving than they are staying.” Her four eldest children are 20, 18, 17, and 15 years old.

Her son Drake, who studies just an hour away from Waco, enjoys cooking with his girlfriend. Gaines expresses pride, sharing, “They have these nights where they go all out, and they cook three-, four-, or five-course meals. I mean, he still gets Whataburger, but I think the fact that he’s feeding himself — he’s making grilled chicken, he’s making steaks — he’s set for life.”

In her busy household, cooking has transformed into a form of meditation for Gaines. She reflects, “I get home every day from work at 5:30. That’s when the kids typically get home after sports and everything. And now it’s become a thing where if I’m not working with my hands in the kitchen, I’m not getting that downtime.”

A Deep Connection to Her Roots

Gaines’ deep-rooted connection to Waco shapes her life, both personally and professionally. Her family relocated to the area when she was just 12 after stints in Austin and even Seoul, Korea. Over the years, the couple, along with her husband Chip, has played a significant role in transforming Waco into a Magnolia-themed tourist destination.

In 2023, the couple showcased how they turned this humble Texan town into a vibrant hub for visitors. On a recent episode of the “Today” show, Jenna Bush Hager questioned Chip about their achievements, to which he responded, “I can’t believe it. Even saying it out loud feels like we want to hide in the corner. Like, that can’t be true.” Their journey was born from a simple dream that resonated with many across the nation.

Reflecting on their whirlwind journey, Chip noted, “We built and built and tried and tried, and, for the first time, Jo and I are looking backward. A lot happened, and you didn’t get to really stop and smell the roses while it was occurring. Now, we’re finally in a really nice place.”

Waco Farmhouse: A Changed Perspective

In 2020, Joanna shared her initial doubts about their current Waco farmhouse, which she had considered a poor investment. She recalled, “We’d recently finished renovating a house that was intended to be a flip but that I’d come to love, that truly — finally — felt like home for our family, when one day Chip announced a new prospect.” The idea of acquiring a farmhouse outside of town seemed unlikely to her, as she thought, “It was a ‘no’ for me right from the start.” However, witnessing her children relish the property shifted her perspective.

“The kids would run wild while Chip and I sat beneath one of the oak trees. Something felt right about our family being there despite all the very good reasons we didn’t belong,” she shared, illustrating how her initial reservations transformed into a sense of belonging.

Building a Legacy in Waco

Married since 2003, Joanna and Chip are proud parents of five children: Ella, Drake, Crew, Emmie, and Duke. As they have set down roots in Waco, their Magnolia brand has flourished. The couple first broke into the spotlight over a decade ago through HGTV’s “Fixer Upper,” showcasing their talent for revitalizing dilapidated homes across Waco.

After completing five successful seasons, they transitioned to Discovery+ to launch the Magnolia Network in 2022. Their portfolio has expanded to include several ventures, such as the attractive Magnolia Market at the Silos, featuring shops, a bakery, and a coffee shop.

The couple also owns the Magnolia Table restaurant nearby and publishes the Magnolia Journal magazine. Additionally, they have authored several lifestyle books, with Joanna publishing “Home Body” and Chip penning “No Pain, No Gaines.” Their home goods line, Magnolia Home, reflects their design aesthetic, while Joanna’s Hearth and Hand collection at Target illustrates their broad appeal.
