Baltimore Orioles rookie pitcher Brandon Young faced an unexpected challenge on Friday, losing his perfect game bid just four outs away, during the team’s commanding 7-0 victory over the Houston Astros.
Young, 26, showcased impressive skill throughout the game until a pivotal moment during the eighth inning altered his trajectory. With the chance to make history, the stakes heightened as Astros second baseman Ramon Urias stepped up to the plate.
In a tense 2-2 count, Young delivered a changeup on the outside part of the plate. Urias managed to make contact, sending a soft ground ball toward the infield, positioned between the pitcher’s mound and third base.
Young reacted quickly but faced a time crunch due to Urias’ speed. He picked up the ball with his bare hand, turned, and launched an errant throw to first base, which allowed Urias to reach safely. Initially, this moment of inopportune timing was classified as a hit for Urias, while Young received an error for allowing Urias to advance to second base due to the wild throw.
After the game, Young reflected on the misplay, expressing regret. He stated that he believed he could successfully make the play but felt rushed. He admitted, “I thought I could make the play. I got there in time. I think I had a little more time to maybe take a step and make a better throw. Obviously, rushed it, yanked it. Definitely want it back.”
Despite the setback, Young managed to regain focus and struck out Astros’ center fielder Taylor Trammell to conclude the inning. Overall, Young delivered an impressive performance, pitching for eight innings and allowing only the single hit to Urias. Additionally, he tied his career-high with six strikeouts, highlighting his resilience under pressure.
Orioles catcher Adley Rutschman applauded Young’s execution throughout the game. Rutschman noted, “He was throwing all of his pitches for strikes, behind in counts, ahead in counts. Was able to mix locations well. Thought he just executed his plan really well.”
As the game progressed, Young was acutely aware of the perfect game hanging in the balance. He acknowledged it was a challenging mental exercise, saying, “It’s really hard not to think about it. It’s kind of just trying to calm yourself down and think about just one pitch at a time. Kind of breathe, calm myself down a little bit, but I could tell what was happening.”
Young’s journey to this high-stakes moment has deep roots. Hailing from Lumberton, Texas, located less than 100 miles northeast of Houston, he had family members in attendance at Daikin Park. This venue held significant meaning for him, as he began attending games there at the age of five, which shaped his aspirations to play at the professional level.
Looking ahead, the Orioles, now with a record of 56-66, will continue their three-game series against the Astros, currently standing at 68-54. The next game is set for Saturday at 7:10 p.m. ET, where fans will be eager to see if Young can build upon this closely contested outing.
The excitement of baseball continues to captivate audiences, and players like Brandon Young exemplify the passion and determination inherent to the sport. As fans reflect on this close call, the anticipation for what lies ahead remains palpable.
