Lost Wallet Reunited with Owner After 11 Years Beneath Ford Vehicle Hood

A Minnesota mechanic stumbled upon a remarkable piece of history while servicing a 2015 Ford Edge: a wallet that had been lost by a Michigan Ford assembly plant worker more than a decade ago.

Chad Volk, the owner of LC Car Care in Lake Crystal, Minnesota, made the discovery while replacing the vehicle’s cooling fans. While pulling out the airbox, he noticed something unusual, leading him to investigate further. This simple decision opened a nostalgic chapter from 2014.

As Volk tried to reassemble the airbox, it wouldn’t fit back in place correctly. His curiosity turned into a surprising discovery when he found the wallet hidden under the hood.

“And that’s where the wallet was,” Volk shared with KARE 11, describing his astonishment upon finding the long-lost item.

Connecting the Dots: How the Wallet Was Traced

Realizing the significance of the wallet, Volk delved inside to examine its contents. Inside, he discovered the Ford Motor Company employee identification badge that connected the wallet to Richard Guilford, a retired autoworker.

“I was surprised. You find stuff all the time, usually tools,” Volk told the Detroit Free Press. “I looked through it, and I saw a Ford Motor Co. badge. I thought, ‘I’m going to try finding this guy to see if I can get it back to him.'”

Using the power of social media, Volk reached out through Facebook to locate Guilford. The retired worker, who had assembled Ford vehicles in Michigan, immediately recognized the wallet as his own.

“Is this your wallet?” Volk asked, prompting an immediate and nostalgic response.

“The first thing I said was, ‘Did you find that in a car?'” Guilford replied, reminiscing about the day he lost it around Christmas in 2014.

Recalling the Day of Loss

Guilford described the chaos of that day when he lost his wallet. He had been diligently working to fix electrical issues in Ford Edges when he noticed that his wallet had disappeared. The unusual situation of wearing sweatpants instead of his regular work attire caused him to inadvertently place the wallet in his shirt pocket.

As Guilford leaned over to work on a vehicle, the wallet slipped out, landing beneath the hood without him realizing it. “At about 2 a.m., I turned to a co-worker and told him I lost my wallet,” he recalled, noting how several colleagues joined him in the search.

“You know, there were about 2,000 cars out there, and we couldn’t find it,” Guilford explained, emphasizing the multitude of vehicles competing for attention on the assembly line.

Despite knowing exactly which vehicles he had worked on that shift, he never thought to check under the airbox where the wallet had ultimately ended up.

The Journey of the Ford Edge

The Ford Edge continued its journey after Guilford lost his wallet, eventually reaching a dealership in Arizona. Later, it found its way to Lake Crystal, where Volk made the astonishing discovery after the vehicle had accumulated over 150,000 miles. This extraordinary chain of events led to the eventual reunion of man and wallet.

A Treasured Reunion

After connecting with Guilford online, Volk took it a step further by mailing the wallet to Guilford’s home in Petersburg, Michigan. Upon its arrival, Guilford uncovered not just the leather wallet but also some cash along with long-expired lottery tickets and several gift cards.

“And there’s nothing wrong with the money at all,” said Guilford, who was delighted to find $15 in cash. “It’s well-traveled currency,” he added, reflecting on the wallet’s remarkable journey.

He also found $250 in Cabela’s gift cards, originally intended for Christmas purchases over a decade ago. To Guilford’s amazement, after checking with Cabela’s, he discovered that the gift cards were still valid despite being out of circulation for so long.

A Grateful Exchange

Just days after the wallet’s return, the two men engaged in a heartfelt video chat. Guilford expressed his disbelief and gratitude, stating, “I would have never, ever figured in a million years that would still be there.”

In a lighthearted moment, Volk responded, “I’m going to have to start digging through cars more often, I guess, in the engine bays, and see if I can find something else.”

Legacy of Connection and Nostalgia

This incredible story not only highlights the unexpected finds that mechanics may encounter during repairs but also underscores the powerful connections that can arise from seemingly ordinary circumstances. The reunion of Richard Guilford and his long-lost wallet echoes the significance of memories, belonging, and the threads that bind us together.

As this remarkable tale circulates, it serves as a reminder of the hidden treasures that lie within the everyday objects we often overlook. Each vehicle might carry a story waiting to be uncovered, proving that even an old wallet can spark joy and connection more than a decade after being lost.
