Finding God’s Peace Amidst Life’s Turmoil: A Lesson from the Airport

In the mid-1970s, Steven Spielberg released the iconic film ‘Jaws,’ a gripping tale about a monstrous shark lurking off the New England coast. One memorable scene features a weathered boat captain, a police chief, and a marine biologist setting off on a small vessel to hunt the shark. When they catch sight of the creature, terror grips them. The police chief aptly states one of cinema’s most famous lines, declaring that they would need a bigger boat.

Imagine if these characters had the advantage of a more substantial craft, such as the Seawise Giant. Recognized as the largest ship ever constructed, it measures more than four football fields in length and weighs over 564,000 tons.

Had they viewed the fearsome shark from the deck of this massive oil tanker, their response would have been markedly different. Instead of panic, they would likely have felt safe, discussing the great white shark and even capturing photographs without overwhelming fear.

Life presents a sea filled with challenges that can feel like sharks attacking. However, these challenges do not have the power to destroy you. Why is this? Because you navigate the waters aboard the vessel called Living God. In His hands, you find safety, a solid foundation in His plans, and sustenance through His grace.

One essential truth emerges in this turbulent world: without a sense of divine support, facing life’s adversities can feel overwhelming. When you believe you are alone in confronting difficulties, deep, lasting peace remains elusive. Conversely, when you understand that you face life’s storms in the presence and power of the Lord, a new joy envelops you.

The assurance offered by Jesus is profound. He states, ‘Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid’ (John 14:27, NKJV).

In this declaration, Jesus introduces us to two forms of peace: the transient peace found in worldly circumstances and the deep, abiding peace that He offers.

Worldly peace hinges significantly on external factors. It is contingent upon having favorable weather, minimal traffic, or a robust stock market. Additionally, personal contentment, timely flights, and health metrics such as cholesterol levels play crucial roles in this conditional peace.

Ask yourself, is your peace dependent on such conditions? If so, it may be time to exchange this ‘if’ peace for the peace bestowed by Christ.

‘My peace I give to you,’ He emphasizes. This is not a generic peace; it is His very own peace that He offers.

During a recent experience at Chicago O’Hare Airport, I witnessed a striking image of this peace. The atmosphere buzzed with tension as thunder rumbled outside, and disgruntled passengers awaited news of delayed flights. With the hour growing late, frustration and discontent filled the air.

Surrounded by complaints, I too contributed to the atmosphere of dismay over airport food. Yet, amidst the upset, a calm presence emerged. Close by, a mother cradled her infant, fully covered by a blanket. Surprisingly, the calmest individual in the entire airport was this baby, merely a few months old.

This infant radiated tranquility, bolstered by the warmth, nourishment, and assurance provided by their mother. In her presence, the child felt safe and at peace. In stark contrast, if the child were removed from the mother’s arms, fear would inevitably ensue. However, nestled within the fold of her care, the baby created a serene oasis amidst the chaos of the airport.

As you picture this airport scene, consider whether you embody the anxious, frantic travelers or the restful infant. God yearns to provide the type of peace that the mother granted her child—His warmth, nourishment, and assurance.

We can experience the peace that comes from Jesus. Through faith, we can uproot catastrophic thoughts and replace them with truths like this comforting promise: ‘The peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts’ (Philippians 4:7, NKJV).

When your heart seeks peace, remember to trust in God. His peace is not conditional—it is a gift that brings joy, even amid life’s storms. In a world filled with distractions and difficulty, the assurance of His presence remains a steadfast anchor.

This gentle reminder should resonate deeply within you: in the chaos of life, seek the comfort and peace that only God can provide, akin to the unwavering safety of a child in their mother’s arms.
