Speaking with Fox News Digital, Adams conveyed that he is not concerned about federal intervention affecting the New York City Police Department (NYPD).
On Monday morning, Adams unveiled plans to expand the NYPD’s Quality of Life Division across Staten Island. This initiative aims to address various public safety concerns, including cleaning up homeless encampments, curbing outdoor drug use, and responding to noise complaints.
This announcement occurred just one day after a tragic shooting incident in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, which left 14 individuals injured, including three fatalities. The recent violence has heightened concerns over crime rates in the city.
Adams emphasized that his decision to expand the NYPD’s efforts is independent of President Donald Trump’s crime crackdown in Washington, D.C., which has garnered significant national attention.“As we have stated repeatedly, we can handle this ourselves,” Adams told Fox News Digital. He added, “Our statistics speak for themselves.”
Trump’s initiative involves federalizing the Metropolitan Police Department, dispatching hundreds of National Guard troops and federal agents to Washington, D.C., to combat crime and enhance the urban environment. In contrast, Adams maintains that New York City’s approach to crime is proving successful without federal oversight.
Addressing Crime with Local Resources
During his remarks, Adams highlighted the NYPD’s impressive record of achieving significant declines in shootings and murders over the past year. During the announcement, several Staten Islanders shared their grievances with the mayor, further emphasizing the need for quality of life improvements. One resident detailed issues such as unclean floors in her building, garbage problems, dysfunctional elevators, and a lack of hot water.
