Thirty individuals affiliated with Tren de Aragua, a Venezuelan criminal organization classified as a foreign terrorist group, have been indicted in Colorado. Their charges encompass serious offenses such as murder-for-hire, drug trafficking, and firearms-related crimes.
Tren de Aragua, often referred to as TdA, has a notorious history linked to various crimes including murder, extortion, kidnapping, and a wide spectrum of trafficking activities involving both drugs and humans.
According to law enforcement, numerous TdA members are implicated in illegally entering the United States, thereby introducing their violent operations into communities across the country, particularly in Colorado.
U.S. Attorney for Colorado, Peter McNeilly, addressed the media during a press conference where he detailed the extent of the charges. He stated, “These defendants include Tren de Aragua leaders, members, and associates. The charges detail a horrific murder-for-hire scheme, whereby several of the defendants agreed to execute two individuals for $15,000, demanding an additional $5,000 for returning the victims’ severed heads as proof of the murders.”
A comprehensive nine-month investigation centered around criminal activities at a Denver-area apartment complex culminated in a grand jury delivering charges against 28 defendants through a 39-count indictment.
The offenses listed include firearms trafficking, utilizing firearms in drug-related crimes, illegal possession of firearms, and drug trafficking activities. Additionally, five of the defendants are facing charges related to conspiracy for murder-for-hire.
McNeilly provided insight into the perpetrated crimes, stating that the indictment reveals a disturbing narrative involving individuals who are willing to sell dangerous weapons and narcotics. He noted that the affidavits in the case also highlight a murder-for-hire plot along with allegations of sex trafficking.
He recounted a chilling anecdote, revealing that one defendant boasted to undercover officers about using individuals known from news reports who had committed crimes in the very apartment complexes in Aurora.
During this exhaustive investigation, agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives managed to seize 69 firearms, including automatic weapons. Authorities assert that many of these firearms are linked to various gun-related crimes, including shootings, carjackings, robberies, and drive-by shootings occurring in Denver and Aurora.
ATF Special Agent in Charge Brent Beavers emphasized the significance of these recoveries, stating, “By removing these firearms from the street, we disrupted a dangerous cycle of violence, preventing further harm to our communities. We are committed at both the local and federal levels to bring justice to those involved in such criminal networks.”
A separate indictment has targeted Luis Fernando Uribe-Torrealba and Luis Henriquez-Charaima, both aged 29, on six counts including murder-for-hire, carjacking, drug trafficking, and firearms trafficking. These two men were apprehended in Colombia on July 30 following the issuance of a provisional arrest warrant from the United States.
Both suspects currently remain in custody in Colombia as extradition proceedings are initiated.
Of the 28 other individuals indicted, 24 are now in federal custody, highlighting the extensive reach and enforcement efforts of law enforcement agencies.
Arapahoe County Sheriff Tyler Brown commented on the implications of the arrests, stating, “Each one of those 69 guns signifies the saving of a life. Every ounce of narcotics removed from the streets represents another life saved. This community has experienced a significant decrease of 75% in calls for service, which is transformative for the residents here.”
Surveillance footage from earlier this year went viral, showing heavily armed individuals storming an apartment door in Aurora. This intense footage purportedly displayed TdA members intimidating residents and enforcing extortion for protection.
The activities of Tren de Aragua have not only drawn local media attention but have also become a focal point in the upcoming 2024 presidential campaign. Former President Donald Trump has vowed to “liberate Aurora” from what he characterizes as the dominance of foreign criminal elements. He asserts that illegal immigrants are seizing control of the town.
However, the Aurora Police Department has referred to claims of gangs overtaking buildings as exaggerated while acknowledging the presence of Tren de Aragua within the community.
The ongoing efforts to dismantle criminal networks like Tren de Aragua reflect a significant determination by law enforcement agencies to restore peace and safety to affected communities. The combined efforts of local, state, and federal law enforcement showcase an unwavering commitment to fighting organized crime.
As the legal proceedings unfold, the community watches closely, hoping for a swift resolution that will herald a safer environment free from the threats posed by such organizations.
