Former NYC Council Political Insider Questions Mamdani’s Mayoral Ambitions
The former Republican leader of the New York City Council recently expressed skepticism about Zohran Mamdani’s ability to maintain his lead in the mayoral race. According to Joe Borelli, who held a council seat for over nine years, Mamdani may struggle to fulfill many of his campaign promises even if he is elected.
Borelli shared his insights with Fox News Digital regarding the current state of the mayoral contest. Key players, such as sitting Mayor Eric Adams, former Governor Andrew Cuomo, and Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa, remain in the competition against Mamdani and his openly socialist agenda. Borelli emphasizes that the race is far from settled.
He stated, “The race is not even close to over. We’ll witness the first set of polls after Labor Day, around September 10th or 11th, which will significantly define the race.”
Following Mamdani’s victory over Cuomo in the Democratic primary earlier this summer, speculation has emerged regarding Cuomo’s strategies. He reportedly hopes that former President Trump could galvanize GOP voters in New York City to support him.
Cuomo’s campaign has publicly dismissed rumors regarding any influence Trump may have in the New York City mayoral race. Borelli mentioned that an endorsement from Trump could potentially backfire, despite its perceived advantages.
“Trump could help Cuomo by encouraging Sliwa and Adams to exit the race, which would bring significant change,” Borelli explained. “However, I have to acknowledge that Trump’s popularity doesn’t resonate well with the New York voter base.”
Mamdani’s ambitious platform includes promises for free childcare, free public transport, and city-owned grocery stores. These proposals, however, raise significant questions regarding their feasibility.
Borelli’s extensive experience in the city council leads him to believe that many of Mamdani’s pledges are impractical. He noted, “Mamdani can’t accomplish most of his promises on his own. For instance, the MTA currently operates at a loss—significantly in the red. It’s unclear how he would convince the MTA board to endorse any free public transport scheme, as such programs could cost billions of dollars.”
Moreover, Mamdani’s plan to establish a city-run grocery store in each of New York City’s five boroughs faces skepticism, even from Governor Kathy Hochul. At a recent gathering in the Hamptons, she voiced her support for free enterprise while critiquing Mamdani’s grocery store proposal.
“I support free enterprise,” Hochul said, making clear her stance against a city-operated grocery model, which further complicates Mamdani’s plans. As the various candidates continue to vie for position, Mamdani holds a leading status in this closely watched election.
