A devastating tour bus accident occurred on Friday, leading to the deaths of five individuals, including a Columbia University student. The incident took place on a rural part of Interstate 90 on the New York State Thruway as the bus returned from a visit to Niagara Falls.
The deceased student, identified as Xie Hongzhuo, aged 22, hailed from Beijing, China. She was an active member of the Columbia University community and her untimely death has left many in shock and mourning.
In a heartfelt statement released to the media, a spokesperson for Columbia University expressed deep condolences. They mentioned, “This heartbreaking loss is felt deeply across our community. We are in close contact with her family and offering them our full support. Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with her family, friends, and all who have been touched by this tragedy.”
To support those affected by this incident, the university is offering counseling and other necessary resources for its students.
Alongside Xie Hongzhuo, New York State Police reported that four additional victims were involved in the tragedy. The names of these victims are Shankar Kumar Jha, aged 65 from Madhu Bani, India; Pinki Changrani, aged 60 from East Brunswick, New Jersey; and two individuals, Zhang Xiaolan and Jian Mingli, both aged 55 and 56 respectively, from Jersey City, New Jersey.
The tour bus, managed by M&Y Tour Incorporated, a company based in Staten Island, was traveling eastward from Niagara Falls to New York City. At approximately 12:30 p.m., the bus lost control, crossed the median, and rolled onto its side in Pembroke, which is about 40 minutes away from Buffalo, according to information released by state authorities.
The driver, identified as Bin Shao, who is 55 years old and resides in Flushing, New York, reportedly showed no signs of being impaired. Furthermore, initial assessments indicated there were no mechanical failures with the bus. Shao admitted to police that he may have been distracted prior to the crash and over-corrected while driving.
Following the accident, Erie County Medical Center confirmed that a total of 21 individuals required medical attention due to the incident. Among these patients, seven were discharged soon after treatment.
Currently, three patients remain in the observation unit pending discharge, while six others have been admitted in stable condition. Tragically, five patients have been placed in the trauma intensive care unit, raising concerns about their conditions. It remains uncertain if additional victims were transferred to other hospitals in the area.
The National Transportation Safety Board has initiated an investigation into the accident, sending a specialized go-team to evaluate the situation. The tour bus has since been taken to state police barracks for forensic analysis as part of the ongoing investigation.
A multitude of agencies responded to the scene, including New York State Police, the Genesee County Sheriff’s Office, and various emergency management groups. Their swift response showcased the collaborative efforts of local authorities in dealing with such a calamity.
The incident has garnered widespread attention, as it underscores not only the dangers associated with tour bus travel but also the importance of roadway safety for all travelers.
The loss of lives in this tragic event resonates deeply within the community, particularly among students at Columbia University who viewed Xie Hongzhuo as a friend and colleague. The university has emphasized the importance of supporting one another during this difficult time.
As investigations continue to uncover the cause of the crash, the university hopes that support services offered will help students cope with the emotional toll of this loss.
Various organizations, including the Genesee County Fire Department and local medical centers, are cooperating with authorities to provide necessary care to the victims and assistance during the ongoing investigation.
