Alexa Ray Joel Opens Up About Father Billy Joel’s Health and Lifestyle Changes Amid Brain Disorder Struggles

Alexa Ray Joel Shares Insight on Billy Joel’s Health Journey

In a recent interview, Alexa Ray Joel provided an update regarding her father, the iconic musician Billy Joel, as he navigates his health challenges associated with a brain disorder.

The renowned singer, who is currently 76 years old, revealed his diagnosis of normal pressure hydrocephalus, commonly known as NPH, in May. This condition affects his vision, hearing, and balance, compelling the artist to make substantial lifestyle adjustments.

Alexa, the daughter of Billy and supermodel Christie Brinkley, expressed her admiration for her father’s resilience amidst these trials. She noted to Fox News Digital, “He has been incredibly resilient through all of this.”

She commented on their contrasting personalities, stating, “Unfortunately, I didn’t inherit that trait because I tend to express my feelings openly. He, on the other hand, remains remarkably stoic, especially in his older age.”

Alex explained that while her father has always been a private person regarding his discomforts, he has refused to complain about his condition. She stated, “He’s so cool about everything. He tends to downplay his situation and reassure me not to worry. I would frequently ask, ‘How are you feeling? Are you OK?'”

Significant Lifestyle Modifications

Alexa detailed her father’s commitment to his health, outlining the significant changes he has embraced since his diagnosis. “He is dedicated to physical therapy three to five days a week, which is crucial for him right now,” she explained. “Moreover, he has significantly modified his diet. Just the other night, I was surprised when he opted for chicken instead of steak. It’s like he is a new man now.”

She continued, “He is now incorporating eggplant and various vegetables into his meals. Our discussion regarding his newfound appreciation for eggplant brought a laugh, as he previously detested it. He told me, ‘Oh, I’ve learned to love it.'”

Demonstrating clear pride in her father’s progress, Alexa declared, “I am truly proud of how he has adapted his habits. He appears to be healthier than ever regarding his lifestyle choices.”

A Belief in His Cognitive Abilities

Despite his health issues, Alexa noted that she has not observed any decline in her father’s cognitive functioning. Reassuring concerned fans, she remarked, “Many people have expressed worry about potential cognitive decline; however, I have not witnessed any changes in his mental acuity.”

During a recent segment for SiriusXM, where she features Billy’s channel, Alexa mentioned her interactions with her father about his music. She reminisced, “I would ask him about the albums and specific years. His ability to recall the precise order of songs and the context behind them is remarkable. To me, he remains as sharp as ever.”

Reflecting on her own aptitude, she stated, “I feel fortunate to have inherited a strong memory. I remember everything, and I deeply appreciate that trait.”

Following in Musical Footsteps

Like her father, Alexa has forged a path in the music industry. Kicking off her journey at 15, she introduced her EP titled “Sketches” in August 2006. Over the years, she has released several singles and performed alongside Billy at numerous charity events and political gatherings.

Recently, she unveiled her latest single, “Riverside Way,” marking the debut of her upcoming five-song EP. In discussing this new project, she articulated her desire to take her music into a more audacious direction. “It is personally significant, as it signifies that I refuse to be confined to a single label. As an artist, my identity encompasses multiple dimensions,” she explained.

Listening to Alexa patently reveals her thoughtful approach to artistry. She articulated, “Society often has a tendency to box women into oversimplified categories. I wanted ‘Riverside Way’ to be a representation of the myriad facets of my personality. There is a demure side to me, but there’s also a more adventurous and inquisitive persona that craves exploration and storytelling beyond traditional boundaries.”

Describing the concept behind her song, she further detailed the vivid imagery she wanted to conjure: “I envisioned a scene where a girl is immersed in a joyful escapade, speeding down the highway, lost in the moment of adventure. It reflects my love for creating that vivid escapism in my artistry.”

A Reflection on Family Heritage

Alexa is Billy and Christie’s only child, born in December 1985, shortly after their marriage. Their romance once inspired Billy’s classic hit, “Uptown Girl”, marking a significant moment in music history. Despite their 1994 divorce, both parents have maintained a strong bond and friendship for the sake of their daughter.

Reflecting on their relationship, Alexa shared, “There has always been deep-seated love between my parents. I genuinely believe that some of that love remains, even after their separation.”

She also contributed to the new HBO documentary about her father’s life titled “Billy Joel: And So It Goes,” participating in a detailed interview that showcased her perspective on their shared experiences. Her memories often revolve around joy and creativity during her childhood, marked by family musicals and warm interactions between her parents.

“Our home was filled with music, laughter, and creativity,” Alexa recounted. “Despite their separation, I treasure those moments, and I know they both cherish those years as well.”

Lessons Learned from Parental Experiences

In light of her upbringing and her parents’ journey, Alexa has cultivated a nuanced understanding of relationships and marriage. “Having experienced multiple divorces within my family, my perspective on marriage is different. I recognize its beauty but also its complexities,” she said thoughtfully.

She emphasized the value of learning from the highs and lows of relationships, crediting her parents for shaping her understanding of what love and companionship involve. “I feel fortunate to learn from their experiences, reflecting on the lessons they imparted through their struggles and successes,” she concluded.
