Petition Surges to 2.5 Million Signatures for Truck Driver Charged in Fatal Crash

Petition for Leniency in Fatal Crash Case Gains Momentum

A petition urging Florida officials to exercise leniency towards Harjinder Singh, an illegal immigrant truck driver accused of causing a fatal crash that claimed three lives, has attracted nearly 2.5 million signatures as of Sunday afternoon.

The petition, hosted on Change.org and directed at Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, calls for both the governor and the Florida Board of Executive Clemency to revisit the situation surrounding the 28-year-old’s case. Singh faces three counts of vehicular homicide alongside three counts of manslaughter related to the tragic incident that occurred on August 12.

Details of the Incident

Singh, 28, was driving a commercial semi-truck on the Florida Turnpike in Fort Pierce when he allegedly made an unauthorized U-turn. Officials stated that the trailer jackknifed, resulting in a collision with a minivan that held three passengers, who all died at the scene.

Legal Proceedings and Arrest

After the incident, Singh was apprehended in Stockton, California, on August 16 and subsequently extradited back to Florida. Investigators revealed that he and his passenger, Harneet Singh, fled to Sacramento shortly after the deadly crash, according to information from the U.S. Marshals Service.

Just recently, a Florida judge denied bond for Singh. Judge Lauren Sweet of St. Lucie County classified Singh as an unauthorized alien and deemed him a significant flight risk. The judge also found sufficient probable cause for all six charges against Singh, categorizing them as forcible felonies under Florida law.
