Trump Administration Halts California’s Controversial Gender Ideology in Education

California Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom faced scrutiny for exposing children to inappropriate sexual content and promoting radical views on childhood sexuality, all funded by federal taxpayer dollars. The Trump administration has taken decisive action to end this controversial practice.

The federally funded Personal Responsibility Education Program, or PREP, in California contains elements of radical gender ideology. Critics argue this approach strays from biological facts and established scientific standards, thereby exceeding the intentions of PREP’s founding legislation. Consequently, California will no longer receive federal funds for what many deem indoctrination of its youth.

The primary goal of PREP, as defined by its legislative authority, is to provide adolescents with education regarding both abstinence and contraception to avert unplanned pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections. Program materials are required to be based on scientifically accurate and age-appropriate information. They are also encouraged to illustrate positive examples of healthy relationships and family communication.

While Newsom’s office contends that California’s PREP delivers comprehensive and evidence-based education, the truth appears to be far more alarming. The written curricula demonstrate a stark departure from these claims. For instance, “Teen Talk,” one of the core programs targeted at middle and high school students, instructs educators to inform students that some men may possess female anatomy at birth. The program suggests that a boy can feel like a girl internally and challenge traditional community standards regarding behavior.

This troubling program does not stop there. For students grappling with gender dysphoria, PREP advocates several potentially harmful avenues to explore their gender identity. Recommendations include changing their names, engaging in hormone therapy, and even altering their physical appearance through surgical procedures.

Far from offering medically sound and biologically grounded education, the materials propagated under Newsom’s administration propagate harmful misconceptions. These teachings create a foundation that could enable young males to enter women’s sports and infringe upon female-only spaces, including locker rooms.

The nationwide rise in gender ideology as a social contagion poses risks, particularly for young girls already experiencing anxiety regarding their bodies. These trends may lead to increased decisions regarding puberty blockers or irreversible surgeries, which can jeopardize their ability to conceive and elevate suicide risks.

Transparent communication with parents regarding classroom content is essential. Yet California’s government has effectively institutionalized indoctrination through legislative measures, such as the California Healthy Youth Act. This act, introduced in 2016, mandates that sexual health education affirm radical gender ideologies.

However, the bypassing of parental oversight in providing so-called gender-affirming care has failed to yield better results for those experiencing gender confusion. A private analysis of data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicates that suicide rates among individuals aged 12 to 23 surge in states where minors access puberty blockers and cross-sex hormones without parental consent. In contrast, states imposing restrictions enjoy comparatively lower suicide rates.

While California may allocate state funds to support its progressive agenda, it should not expect access to federal grant money to continue under these circumstances.

The Trump administration stands firmly with parents in protecting children from educational content that contradicts proven biological principles. Just two months ago, a formal letter was sent to Governor Newsom, demanding the removal of all gender ideology references from PREP’s teaching materials. This correspondence underscored the potential loss of federal funding should California fail to comply within a specified timeframe.

On August 19, Newsom’s office responded, claiming that California would not modify its curricula, asserting that their materials are both medically accurate and compliant with statutory requirements. However, these assertions do not hold up to scrutiny, and the governor must recognize this reality. As threatened, Newsom’s defiance of federal law has culminated in the cessation of California’s PREP grant.

This initial action marks just the beginning of a broader response. The Department of Health and Human Services is committed to ensuring that educational content across all state PREP programs adheres strictly to medically accurate and age-appropriate standards. Following a comprehensive review of PREP curricula nationwide, states found to be non-compliant will be formally alerted to align with the law or face losing their federal funds.

Education related to the prevention of pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections must not serve as a distributor of radical gender ideology. Under the leadership of President Trump, California will not receive federal backing for its models of subversive teachings that endanger the health and well-being of its youth.
