In an unprecedented development, arrests related to President Donald Trump’s federal crime initiative in Washington, D.C., have surpassed 1,000. This milestone coincides with the capital celebrating its 12th consecutive day without a homicide, as announced by U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro on Monday.

Pirro disclosed that on a single day, Sunday, there were 86 arrests alongside the confiscation of 10 illegal firearms. This brings the cumulative total to 1,007 arrests and 111 firearms seized from the streets of the nation’s capital.

They can’t be used to shoot people, to kill people,” Pirro stated during her appearance on “Fox & Friends,” emphasizing the importance of the weapons seized. She also noted the significance of the recent milestone, emphasizing that policing does indeed yield results. “Today marks the 12th day without a homicide in Washington, D.C. Despite having recorded 101 homicides this year, the last 12 days have yielded zero,” she stated, underscoring the positive impact of enhanced law enforcement.

FBI Contributions to the Initiative

FBI Director Kash Patel revealed that out of Sunday’s arrest figures, 26 came from FBI operations, along with five drug seizures. “Keep getting after it,” Patel encouraged through his social media platform, indicative of the ongoing efforts.

Challenges from Local Officials

Pirro did not hesitate in addressing criticism from Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson, a Democrat, who claimed that only nine arrests had occurred under the federal initiative. Johnson has expressed his resistance to the notion of similar operations being deployed in Chicago, labeling Trump’s measures as disorganized and inappropriate.

Despite this contrasting view, Pirro maintains that the D.C. crackdown effectively deters criminal activity. “The good news is that criminals are hesitant to act when law enforcement is present in their communities. Residents in crime-ridden areas are expressing gratitude for the increased security,” she explained.

She continued, “They fear committing crimes due to the newfound accountability. Johnson ought to wish for similar federal engagement to address the issues in Chicago.”

Chicago, with a population of approximately 2.7 million, has been grappling with elevated homicide rates for over a decade. In fact, the city has recorded the highest homicide figures in the nation for 13 straight years, totaling 573 homicides in 2024 alone, based on the city’s statistics.

On Monday, President Trump further advanced his crime control strategy by signing an executive order aimed at the Washington, D.C., police. This order mandates that law enforcement charge suspects with federal crimes and retain them in federal custody, effectively circumventing cashless bail practices.

Additionally, the president’s orders threaten to withdraw federal funding from any jurisdictions employing cashless bail, reflecting a strong stance on crime management.

Deployment of the National Guard
