Tragic Crash Claims Lives of College Student’s Parents and Leaves Siblings Injured During School Drop-Off

Tragic Accident Strikes Family During College Drop-Off

A devastating highway crash in North Carolina resulted in the deaths of a college student’s parents and left his younger siblings injured. The incident occurred during a family trip to drop off Noah Nunney, a 19-year-old sophomore at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

While waiting on campus to reunite with his family, Nunney received alarming news about a serious accident nearby. He recalled, “When I arrived to the scene, I thought all four were gone. They wouldn’t let me out of the car, and the way that they sat me down and the look on the officer’s face was truly horrifying.”

The tragic event unfolded on Friday, August 15, at approximately 1:18 p.m. as Nunney’s family was leaving their hotel to join him for lunch.

Details of the Collision

Law enforcement reported that the family’s vehicle veered off the road, impacting several small trees before rolling down an embankment and crashing into a large tree. In the aftermath of the crash, Nunney relied on tracking his sister’s phone to monitor their whereabouts, ultimately prompting him to rush to the scene with a friend.

Authorities confirmed that Maria Nunney, 50, who occupied the front passenger seat, was pronounced dead at the scene. Donald Nunney, 55, sustained severe injuries and was later transported to a medical facility, where he succumbed to a heart attack believed to have initiated the crash, as per his son’s statements.

In a heartbreaking turn, Nunney’s younger siblings, aged 9 and 15, survived the accident but suffered significant injuries. His nine-year-old brother faced multiple broken bones and was placed on a ventilator. Fortunately, he has since recovered and is now off the ventilator and “talking nonstop,” according to Nunney.

His 15-year-old sister suffered a brain injury but has begun to walk and communicate, providing some sense of hope amidst the tragedy. While expressing his concern and love for his siblings, Nunney stated, “Since then, that’s been my main priority.” He also noted that his sister has not yet been informed about their parents’ deaths, as he wants to give her time to heal.

Investigation Ongoing

The North Carolina State Highway Patrol has indicated that the investigation into the crash is still active, with details surrounding the cause yet to be fully determined.

According to Nunney, his family had intended to spend a special day on campus before returning to their home in Ohio. His sister, an avid fan of the series “The Summer I Turned Pretty,” was particularly excited about visiting filming locations along with her brother. Tragically, that family outing never materialized.

Community Support and Remembrance

As the family copes with their profound loss, their community has come together to provide support. Both Maria and Donald Nunney were well-respected teachers in the Cleveland Metropolitan School District, beloved for their dedication to education and commitment to family.

Shari Obrenski, president of the Cleveland Teachers Union, shared with local media about the intense grief felt within the school community. She described them as “incredible teachers, loving and attentive and committed parents. They were active in the community. Their loss has hit everyone so hard that it is unimaginable for their family and their children. So shocking, heartbreaking, and just devastating.”

In response to the tragedy, a GoFundMe campaign has been initiated to assist the remaining family members, raising over $350,000 to date. Supporters praised Maria and Donald as “amazing and devoted parents” who instilled a legacy of community, family, and love in all they encountered.

The campaign highlighted their unwavering commitment to their children and roles as educators, stating, “Maria and Donald leave behind a legacy of community, family, and love, all rooted in the devotion they had for their children and their family.”

A Future of Hope

The crash occurred just before the commencement of the academic year at UNC, which started on Monday, August 18. Though Nunney plans to take the fall semester off to care for his siblings, he remains resolute in his determination to complete his college degree. He expressed, “I know that’s what my parents would’ve wanted.”

Reflecting on their last moments together, Nunney shared the significance of his parents dropping him off for his freshman year of college. He recalled, “It was the first time they saw me as an adult. They saw me, truthfully, as more of a man than just their kid, and I felt like that was something that will always stick with me.”

Fox News Digital reached out to both the school district and teachers’ union for further comments regarding the tragic situation. The Nunney family’s heartbreak resonates within their community as they navigate this profound loss together.
