On Tuesday, MSNBC host and former White House press secretary Jen Psaki dedicated a segment to the swirling rumors about President Donald Trump’s health. She expressed her bewilderment regarding Trump’s brief disappearance from the public eye, stating that we might never find out why he suddenly spent a week ‘hiding’ from the American people.
During her segment, Psaki remarked, “You really can’t make this stuff up sometimes,” as she referred to Trump’s comments denying the allegations of his death during a press event earlier that day. She characterized Trump’s response as rambling, adding that while the reasons for his public absence may remain unclear, there is no need for baseless online theories to guess why he might want to avoid public appearances at this time.
On the same day, Trump told reporters that he was very active throughout the Labor Day weekend. However, Psaki speculated on various explanations for his recent lack of visibility.
Psaki cited polling data to highlight the bleak outlook many Americans have regarding their lives. She referred to a newly released survey by the Wall Street Journal which revealed that only 25% of respondents believe they have a good chance to improve their standard of living. This statistic marks a historic low over nearly four decades of polling.
During the segment, Psaki posited that Trump’s reluctance to appear in public may stem from his tumultuous history, particularly his long-term friendship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. She asserted that this association could be a significant reason for Trump’s recent avoidance of public scrutiny. “Lord knows that could be a reason,” she stated, suggesting that the ongoing pushback against his past decisions seems to be having an impact.
The White House did not immediately respond to requests for comments regarding this matter.
Following Psaki’s segment, conservative commentators and social media users criticized her for perceived hypocritical behavior and lack of self-awareness. Many pointed out that Psaki had previously dismissed concerns regarding President Biden’s advanced age and cognitive abilities before his anticipated debate in June 2024 against Trump.
Tom Bevan, co-founder of RealClearPolitics, commented on Psaki’s segment on social media, affirming that she was correct in one respect, stating, “You can’t make this stuff up.” Another user bluntly remarked, “It’s called hypocrisy at its finest,” expressing their disbelief at Psaki’s remarks.
Political commentator Martha Zoller also weighed in, arguing that Psaki has no standing to comment on Trump’s health controversies due to her past role under Biden.
Earlier this year, Psaki had maintained that she never observed diminished capacities in President Biden during her tenure. While appearing on the
