Portland Mayor Keith Wilson has expressed grave concerns regarding the city’s homelessness crisis. In an email addressed to thousands, he stated that if urgent solutions are not implemented, Portland could face federal intervention similar to recent actions in Washington, D.C.
In his communication, Wilson emphasized that the recent federal tactics in D.C. should serve as a wake-up call for Portland. He noted, “Recent events in Washington, D.C. show us what will happen if we don’t move with speed, purpose, and compassion to address the humanitarian crisis on our streets.” He fears that heavy-handed federal measures, which include the use of bulldozers and mass arrests by federal agents, would undermine Portland’s outreach programs and emergency shelter strategies.
Previously, President Trump deployed the National Guard to assist with crime control in Washington, D.C. This was part of a broader plan to tackle crime in urban areas, with mentions of extended initiatives to other cities like Chicago.
Wilson’s message continued by urging residents to combat the expected federal intervention through community engagement. “Let’s work together by volunteering and donating, and prove the administration’s heavy-handed tactics are not needed in our city,” he encouraged.
Highlighting the urgency of the situation, the White House issued a statement through spokeswoman Abigail Jackson, stressing that addressing homelessness is a matter of commonsense. Jackson stated, “All local leaders should see the tremendous results achieved by President Trump in D.C. and look to emulate them in their own cities.” She elaborated that Trump’s approach aims to enhance safety for all residents, including those experiencing homelessness.
The mayor’s email also detailed various ways residents can support local nonprofit organizations that provide essential services to the homeless. Wilson is seeking volunteers to engage directly with homeless residents, noting that available services include haircuts, resume assistance, and veterinary care.
OregonLive reported that the email also listed larger donation needs, such as $12,500 for worship chairs, suggesting an organized approach to resource mobilization to assist the homeless.
“In this case, we’re acting primarily as a switchboard,” said Taylor Zajonc, Wilson’s deputy chief of staff. Zajonc clarified that while the city is not directly accepting donations, it aims to connect citizens with nonprofit providers who can better manage contributions.
Furthermore, Zajonc highlighted the importance of differentiating the mayor’s approach to the homelessness crisis from the more aggressive tactics proposed by the Trump administration. He assured that Wilson’s strategy prioritizes compassionate outreach instead of punitive measures.

In light of a recent violent protest outside a local U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility, he reiterated that local police would refrain from collaborating with ICE.
