Trump Chooses Doral Resort for Historic 2026 G20 Summit in Miami

President Donald Trump has officially announced that his Doral resort in Miami, Florida, will host the 2026 G20 Summit. The announcement came during a press conference held in the Oval Office on Friday.

During the press conference, Trump emphasized the strategic advantages of Doral’s location, particularly its close proximity to the airport. This accessibility is expected to facilitate travel for the international leaders expected to attend.

Trump stated, “It’s going to be a very exciting thing to host the G20. As we celebrate our nation’s 250th anniversary next year, the United States will have the honor of hosting exactly that. The G20 summit right here in America, for the first time in nearly 20 years.” This sentiment highlights the significance of the summit as a milestone event for the nation.

Trump’s Doral Resort Welcomes Prestigious Events in 2026

Additionally, the Doral resort has been a focal point for high-profile events. The venue is set to host the Miami Championship featuring a hefty $20 million purse, indicating its prominence in both sports and global affairs.

The planning of the G20 Summit will be led by National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett, while Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent will coordinate the agenda. Trump clarified that he will not profit from this event, aiming to quell any potential concerns regarding conflicts of interest.

Trump’s Doral resort was previously considered for the 2020 G7 Summit during his first term. However, this proposal faced substantial backlash and was ultimately abandoned, attributed to what Trump described as “media and Democrat crazed and irrational hostility” in a social media post from October 2019.

Florida’s Climate and Support from Local Officials

With Florida renowned for its warm December weather, Trump noted that Miami Mayor Francis Suarez was enthusiastic about bringing the G20 to the city. Suarez pointed out that hosting such a significant event would elevate Miami’s status on the global stage, contributing positively to the local economy.

Suarez stated, “It puts us on the global map.” His remarks underscore the anticipated economic benefits, which could result from increased tourism and international exposure.

Furthermore, Trump confirmed he will not attend the G20 Summit in South Africa in 2025. Instead, he plans to send Vice President JD Vance as his representative, illustrating a shift in the administration’s approach to international engagements.

Understanding the G20 Summit

The G20 Summit, consisting of 19 countries plus the European Union, serves as an essential platform for addressing global economic issues. Participating nations include Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, South Korea, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Turkey, the United Kingdom, and the United States, in addition to both the African Union and the European Union.

The summit aims to foster dialogue and collaboration among leading economies to tackle pressing global challenges. Each year, the summit’s location, dates, and participating leaders vary, highlighting the dynamic nature of international diplomacy.

During the press briefing, Trump revealed that he has already reached out to Polish President Karol Nawrocki, who visited the White House earlier in the week. This early invitation illustrates Trump’s proactive approach in engaging international leaders prior to the summit.

Historically, the last time the United States hosted a full G20 Summit was in 2009 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, during the Obama administration. This upcoming summit will mark a significant return of the United States to a leadership role in global economic discussions.
