Ursuline High School in Youngstown, Ohio, has been named in a federal civil rights lawsuit following alarming allegations brought forth by a former football player. The complaint outlines serious claims of hazing and sexual assault during a football camp held in June, as reported in court documents.
The lawsuit was filed on Tuesday in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Ohio. In addition to Ursuline High School, the complaint also lists several school officials, football coaches, the Catholic Diocese of Youngstown, and various unnamed players and parents as defendants.
The football player, whose identity remains undisclosed but is described as a freshman, alleges he was subjected to multiple instances of sexual assault during a nine-day camp that traveled across Florida, Tennessee, and Alabama. According to a press release from The Chandra Law Firm, which represents the player’s family, these events included a reported assault on the first night of the trip. Allegedly, one player assaulted him while another recorded the incident and shared it with teammates via Snapchat.
Following this incident, the alleged hazing and bullying persisted. On the fourth day of the camp, the plaintiff claims that he was restrained by several players and stripped of his clothing, resulting in a second instance of assault. This incident was similarly filmed and disseminated among the players on social media.
The lawsuit highlights numerous other alleged hazing incidents targeting both the plaintiff and other team members. Importantly, it suggests that school officials did not adequately respond to the player’s complaints. Evidence allegedly indicating threats and bullying was reportedly ignored by coaches, who were aware of the situation yet failed to take effective measures.
The mother of the plaintiff first communicated these allegations to an assistant coach during the camp, alleging that her concerns were dismissed with the remark, ‘just boys being boys.’ Furthermore, she reports that subsequent meetings with school administration revealed a lack of empathy, with officials appearing to show no regret or remorse.
Beyond the hazing and assault allegations, the lawsuit asserts that the plaintiff’s sister experienced intimidation and that the family faced retaliation for coming forward with their complaints. The legal action also includes allegations of Title IX violations, as well as severe accusations such as false imprisonment, stalking, child pornography, and distributing lewd materials.
Subodh Chandra, the lead attorney for the plaintiffs, articulated the purpose of this case, stating, ‘This case is about accountability. No family should have to endure the trauma this family suffered at the hands of other students and then from school officials who allegedly made excuses, ignored, and even attempted to cover up what transpired.’ He invites anyone with relevant information or other victims of similar circumstances to come forward.
The Ursuline High School administration, along with representatives from the Catholic Diocese of Youngstown, publicly responded to the lawsuit, emphasizing their commitment to the safety and well-being of students. The spokesperson for the school confirmed that a police investigation into these allegations is underway and reassured the community of their cooperation with law enforcement.
‘The safety and well-being of our students is Ursuline High School’s top priority,’ the official statement read. ‘Parents can and should feel confident that their students are in a safe environment every day. We want to reiterate the steps we’ve taken regarding the allegations in the football program.’
The school indicates that after the group returned from the trip, they received a formal complaint from a family regarding misconduct, prompting the school to initiate an investigation. In line with this, they informed Diocesan representatives and local authorities immediately. The school continues to cooperate fully with the ongoing police investigation and has refrained from making public comments about the specific allegations at the request of law enforcement and to protect the identity of minors.
Furthermore, the school disclosed that disciplinary actions have been taken against some students directly involved in the incidents. However, some of these students left the institution before disciplinary measures could be implemented. In response to the allegations, Ursuline has increased supervision at events and implemented mandatory review training for all staff.
In light of the ongoing legal challenges and community concerns, the football team’s scheduled game on Friday was canceled following the revelations surrounding the civil lawsuit.
As the story unfolds, the community remains concerned about the implications of these serious allegations. Local residents, parents, and current students share a collective anxiety regarding safety measures in school sports programs. Many are questioning how such incidents could have occurred without adequate oversight or intervention.
As this case progresses through the judicial system, further developments are anticipated. Emphasis on student safety and preventive measures in school sports programs will likely become a focal point for discussions both in Youngstown and beyond as similar incidents have emerged in other educational institutions recently.
