Corey Feldman is stepping back into the limelight as he joins the cast of Dancing With the Stars. The 54-year-old actor gained fame as a child star in iconic 1980s films, including The Goonies, Stand by Me, and The Lost Boys. This season of the hit ABC show, he will compete as a celebrity contestant, partnered with professional dancer Jenna Johnson.
In an interview with Us Weekly, Feldman expressed his enthusiasm about his partnership with Johnson, who recently won the Len Goodman Mirrorball Trophy alongside former The Bachelor star Joey Graziadei in season 33. He remarked, “I’m very grateful to have somebody so eloquent on the dance floor, knowledgeable in moves, rhythms, styles, and technique.” This gratitude reflects his excitement about what they can achieve together.
Feldman has been diligently participating in daily rehearsals with Johnson, realizing that the artistry of ballroom dancing differs significantly from the styles he has embraced throughout his career. He shared, “I’ve danced my whole life professionally, but in totally different styles. My previous choreographers worked around my skills, allowing me to lead the way. Now, I’m ready to take a backseat and let Jenna guide me. I’m excited to learn from her. “
From her side, Johnson conveyed eagerness to watch Feldman grow as a ballroom dancer. “We’re just getting started, so we have much work to do, but I believe audiences will be thrilled to support Corey and witness his evolution as a dancer,” she stated, emphasizing how relatable his journey will be.
Corey Feldman’s career has been a rollercoaster, marked by remarkable highs and challenging lows. Beginning his career at the tender age of three, he performed in commercials and secured minor roles in several television series such as Mork & Mindy and The Love Boat. His breakout role occurred in 1985 when he starred as Clark “Mouth” Devereaux in The Goonies. This film catapulted him into the spotlight, making him a teen idol with subsequent hits like Stand By Me and The Lost Boys.
Yet the transition from child star to adult actor proved difficult. In the 1990s, Feldman faced substance abuse issues and legal troubles that affected his career significantly. He appeared in various B-movies and reality television shows during this period, intertwining his film work with a blossoming music career.
A pivotal moment in Feldman’s life came with the untimely death of his close friend and frequent co-star, Corey Haim, in 2010. Haim died at the age of 38 due to an accidental overdose, a tragic loss that deeply impacted Feldman. This event reignited Feldman’s passion for advocating against child sexual abuse in Hollywood, which he discussed publicly during a 2011 interview.
In a notable interview with ABC, Feldman revealed the darker realities of child stardom, sharing that Haim and he had experienced sexual abuse during their time in the industry. He emphasized, “The number one problem in Hollywood is and always will be pedophilia. It’s the biggest secret. I was surrounded by pedophiles when I was young, and this impacted my friend’s life tragically. That person needs to be exposed, but I cannot be the one to do it.” His advocacy efforts were further amplified with his memoir, Coreyography, released in 2013, where he detailed these experiences.
Throughout the years, Feldman has tirelessly worked to advocate for reforms regarding child sexual abuse in Hollywood. He has utilized his public platform to encourage survivors to speak out, while also pushing for changes to the statute of limitations laws that hinder justice for victims. In 2020, he released the documentary (My) Truth: The Rape of Two Coreys, in which he made serious allegations against fellow actor Charlie Sheen regarding Haim.
This claim was met with denials from Sheen’s representatives and Haim’s mother, Judy Haim, who firmly refuted the allegations during public appearances.
While advocating for survivors, Feldman has continued to pursue his music career. Just recently, he announced that he has three EPs in production, along with a new single slated for release. As he prepares for the ballroom stage, Feldman acknowledges the rigorous demands of rehearsals, stating, “It’s a lot of work. But I’m grateful. Learning is key. I’m grateful to be a student.”
Feldman’s participation in season 34 of Dancing With the Stars is generating buzz, with the season premiering on September 16, 2023. His journey as a dancer will not only demonstrate his talent but also inspire viewers aware of his tumultuous past. Corey Feldman is ready to embrace this new chapter, highlighting resilience in the face of adversity as he navigates the complexities of fame and personal growth.
