FIRST ON FOX: DENVER— John Ramsey, the father of JonBenet Ramsey, who was only six years old when she was murdered in 1996, has reached out to President Donald Trump for assistance in urging Colorado authorities to take a more aggressive stance on this notorious cold case.
Ramsey has openly criticized the Boulder Police Department’s handling of the investigation into his daughter’s murder. He announced plans to engage in fundraising to cover the costs of investigative genetic genealogy, a modern technique that has successfully solved a number of high-profile cold cases, including that of the Golden State Killer.
“I told the DA that money should not be a limit here,” Ramsey shared in an interview with Fox News Digital at CrimeCon in Denver on Saturday. “I need to get Donald Trump involved. He’ll certainly stir things up one way or another, but we have to get them to take action.”
When asked for a comment regarding Ramsey’s claims, the White House referred Fox News Digital to the Justice Department.
In the past, Trump has publicly commented on various criminal cases. For instance, in July, he expressed his thoughts on the plea agreement allowing Bryan Kohberger to avoid the death penalty for murdering four University of Idaho students in 2022. He stated, “These were vicious murders, with so many questions left unanswered. While life imprisonment is certainly tough, it’s much better than receiving the death penalty, but before sentencing, I hope the judge makes Kohberger explain why he committed these horrific murders.”
Additionally, in 2019, Trump called for the release of rapper A$AP Rocky, who faced assault charges in Sweden.
Ramsey has been vocal about his frustrations with how Boulder authorities have managed the murder investigation, yet he also acknowledges a positive shift in the department after meeting with its new leadership.
Ramsey now firmly believes that genetic genealogy could hold the key to cracking the case. He remarked, “I am absolutely convinced that this technology represents the gold standard today. I’ve been pushing for widespread use of it, but I don’t know if the authorities are taking it as seriously as they should.”
He continued, “To me, it’s obvious that such measures are necessary, but I’m at a loss for how to compel them to take action. All I can do is appeal for support.”
At the recent CrimeCon event, Ramsey shared a petition advocating for Colorado lawmakers to amend state law in accordance with the federal Homicide Victim’s Families’ Rights Act. This legislation grants victims’ families the right to request a review of cold cases that have not yielded answers.
Ramsey expressed disbelief regarding the workings of the law enforcement system in the United States. “I was astonished by how fragmented the police jurisdiction system is in our country. We have 18,000 police departments, each operating as its own island of authority. If a police chief on one island refuses to accept help, outside assistance cannot arrive unless invited. I find this approach outdated and inefficient,” he explained.
Earlier, at another CrimeCon held in Las Vegas, Ramsey sought support from Colorado Governor Jared Polis to permit an independent agency to carry out modern DNA testing on evidence related to this case, rather than the Boulder Police Department.
On December 26, 1996, JonBenet was reported missing by her mother, Patsy Ramsey, after she discovered a ransom note demanding $118,000. Tragically, John Ramsey discovered JonBenet’s body that same day in the basement of their Boulder residence.
An autopsy determined that her death resulted from strangulation and a trauma to the head.
Ramsey has regularly criticized the Boulder Police Department, pointing to its “arrogance,” “pride,” “ego,” and lack of experience at the time of his daughter’s death.
The department reported that investigators have followed up on over 21,000 tips, letters, and emails while traveling to 19 states to speak with more than 1,000 individuals in connection with the investigation.
Boulder Police Chief Steve Redfearn remarked in a video message released in November 2024, “The brutal murder of JonBenet was an unspeakable crime that continues to weigh on our hearts. We are dedicated to pursuing every lead and are collaborating with DNA experts and law enforcement agencies nationwide until we bring this tragic case to a resolution. This investigation remains a top priority for the Boulder Police Department.”
