A Texas lawmaker has voiced strong opposition after a Texas A&M University student was reportedly ejected from class for questioning transgender-related content during a lecture.
Texas state Representative Brian Harrison expressed his discontent in a statement, highlighting his surprise at the level of funding for diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives, alongside LGBTQ education in the state. He asserted that after his service under former President Trump, he found it alarming to learn about this funding.
“Texans are being taxed out of their homes, and their money is being weaponized against them, their values, and their children,” Harrison stated. He further insisted that Texas should spearhead the battle against what he terms leftist indoctrination, rather than financially supporting it. He called for the removal of the university’s president and the defunding of all DEI and LGBTQ educational initiatives.
On social media platform X, Harrison shared a video that he claims records the moment a Texas A&M student was removed from class for objecting to the transgender content discussed.
In his post, he wrote, “Caught on tape: Texas A&M student kicked out of class after objecting to transgender indoctrination, and A&M president defends LGBTQ Studies.” The video features a female student who interrupted her class to inquire about the legality of teaching gender ideology, referencing executive orders issued by former President Trump.
Following the incident, Fox News Digital sought out comments from Texas A&M University. The university directed inquiries to a statement by President Mark A. Welsh III, who addressed the situation in a recent post on Texas A&M’s social media account.
“I learned this afternoon that key leaders in the College of Arts and Sciences approved plans to continue teaching course content that was not consistent with the course’s published description,” Welsh stated. In response, he announced that he had instructed the provost to remove the dean and department head from their administrative roles immediately.
Welsh emphasized the importance of adhering to the course catalog and its descriptions. “Our students use this published information to make significant decisions about their educational paths,” he explained, asserting, “If we allow different course content to be taught than what is advertised, we let our students down. When it comes to our educational offerings, we must keep our commitments to our students and to Texas.”
In light of these events, Fox News Digital also reached out to Texas Governor Greg Abbott. On Tuesday, the governor expressed his support for the actions taken against the professor involved, stating on X that the professor should be terminated.
In a letter addressed to Governor Abbott, Harrison disclosed that a whistleblower student from Texas A&M provided his office with video proof of the incident, which occurred during a children’s literature course when the student objected to what he characterized as persistent indoctrination regarding transgender issues and DEI themes.
Harrison alleged in his letter that students were made to learn about the ‘gender unicorn,’ which he described as propagating extreme transgender ideology. He further accused the involved professor of promoting what he termed “criminal child grooming” and distributing materials that suggested childhood is a period for exploring gender identity.
The lawmaker is actively pursuing legislative measures to end taxpayer funding for DEI and LGBTQ programs, having introduced 14 pieces of legislation aimed at this goal. However, all of these proposals have been stymied in the Texas House. Harrison is calling on Abbott to convene a special session to push these bills forward.
As discussions surrounding educational content and curriculum in Texas reach critical levels of scrutiny, many are watching closely to see how state authorities will respond to rising concerns over curriculum transparency and ideological balance in education.
Through this controversy at Texas A&M University, ongoing debates surrounding academic freedom, parental rights, and students’ rights to express viewpoints in educational settings promise to intensify in the months ahead. The unfolding situation exemplifies the broader national conversation on education and the role institutions should play in shaping young minds.
