Inglewood Man Charged in Disturbing Dating App Murders Linked to Masked Burglary Spree

An Inglewood man has been charged with grave accusations involving murders connected to online dating, raising serious concerns about safety in digital interactions. Police reports indicate that 34-year-old Rockim Prowell allegedly exploited a dating app to lure unsuspecting victims into deadly meetings, according to statements from Los Angeles prosecutors.

Prowell faces two counts of murder, characterized by the special circumstance of multiple murders, as outlined in a news release from the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office. The charges also include one count of attempted murder, two counts of carjacking, two counts of second-degree burglary, and one count of assault with a deadly weapon.

One of Prowell’s alleged victims, Miguel Angel King, 51, encountered him on a dating application. Their meeting, which occurred on July 20, 2021, turned fatal when Prowell reportedly shot King and subsequently stole his vehicle, which was located a week later just a few miles from Prowell’s residence. Forensic evidence found inside the car linked Prowell to the murder.

Tragically, King’s remains were discovered nearly a month later on August 14, 2021, in the Angeles National Forest, further highlighting the brutal nature of this case.

In a shocking twist, Prowell’s second victim, 53-year-old Robert Gutierrez, also met him through a dating app. They arranged to meet on August 21, 2023, close to Prowell’s home. Gutierrez’s family reported him missing just two days after their encounter, and to date, his body has not been recovered.

Investigators apprehended Prowell last week, discovering Gutierrez’s vehicle in his garage alongside additional evidence tying him to the disappearance and presumed murder.

Prowell’s violent behavior extends beyond these tragedies. In an earlier incident on February 22, he allegedly entrapped a 40-year-old man he met through the same dating service. Reports indicate that he bound the victim, stole his wallet, and assaulted him with a baseball bat. The man managed to escape but was subsequently chased by Prowell, resulting in severe injuries including a broken leg.

District Attorney Nathan Hochman condemned these acts, stating that the predatory nature of Prowell’s crimes showed a complete disregard for human life. Hochman described the fear and horror felt by victims who were misled into trusting Prowell, only to face a terrifying reality of violence.

Prowell remains on probation for two earlier burglary cases from 2019 to 2021, which occurred in areas such as Beverly Hills and Los Angeles. These ongoing investigations suggest a troubling pattern, with Prowell possibly connected to over 30 masked burglaries across Southern California. Law enforcement officials found a mask in the vehicle Prowell was using, resembling a young white man’s face, during their investigations into these burglaries.

It remains unclear whether this mask is related to the incidents involving the dating app.

If ultimately convicted on all charges, Prowell could face life imprisonment without the possibility of parole or even the death penalty, a decision concerning which will be made later by the authorities.

The Beverly Hills Police Department has not provided immediate comment regarding the ongoing case. Additionally, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office confirmed that they cannot comment further at this time as the case is still unfolding.

This series of incidents underscores the serious risks associated with online dating, drawing attention to the essential need for safety and caution when using such platforms. As authorities continue to investigate Prowell’s past and any potential connections to further crimes, it serves as a stark reminder of the dangers that can lurk behind digital interactions.

Moving forward, it’s crucial for users of dating apps to be vigilant, prioritize their safety, and report any suspicious behavior to local authorities to help prevent further tragedies. In a world where technology connects individuals more than ever, maintaining awareness of personal safety is vital.
