An investigation into a tragic hit-and-run incident at a mobile home park in Florida quickly evolved into a major immigration enforcement operation. During this investigation, police apprehended six men from Guatemala who were illegally residing in the United States.
On Sunday morning, deputies from the Polk County Sheriff’s Office rushed to the Willow Oak Mobile Home Park following a 911 call reporting a 21-year-old man deceased in his residence.
Upon arrival, law enforcement officers discovered the unidentified man’s injuries were consistent with those from being struck by a vehicle.
The sheriff’s Traffic Unit began its inquiry into the incident and learned the victim had suffered fatal injuries in a driveway during a party held at one of the trailers. Eyewitness accounts indicated that the party, which included a sizable gathering of people, involved alcohol consumption.
A witness informed detectives that the victim had been lying on the ground when 52-year-old Ponciano Cinto-Ramirez entered a van parked nearby. The witness reported that Cinto-Ramirez reversed the vehicle, subsequently running over the victim, and then fled the scene.
Despite the crowd’s shouts alerting Cinto-Ramirez that he had struck someone, he continued driving to another trailer on the property, designated as lot #32.
At some point later, party attendees transported the victim back into his home; however, police did not provide details on how this occurred or who was involved in moving him.
When deputies approached lot #32 to question Cinto-Ramirez, they found several individuals within the trailer who initially refused to leave. Eventually, the individuals emerged from the trailer, but many did not cooperate with the deputies or provide relevant information.
According to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, two men handed over false identification. As the investigation progressed, it became clear during interviews that all six detained men were in the United States unlawfully, which complicated their legal circumstances.
Cinto-Ramirez faces several serious charges, including resisting arrest, driving without a license resulting in death, and fleeing the scene of a fatal crash. Each of these charges carries significant penalties under Florida law.
Two other individuals, Rigoberto Lopez Morales, aged 22, and Jacinto Lopez Morales, aged 46, also face charges for resisting arrest.
Alfredo Cinto-Ramirez, aged 48, and Leonel Cinto Lopez, aged 24, were charged with both resisting arrest and providing false information to law enforcement. Ramiro Cinto Lopez, aged 23, encountered similar charges and additional allegations regarding possession of an altered firearm.
Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd confirmed that all six men are under Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) holds. He suggested that the goal is for them to be deported back to Guatemala. Judd noted the serious nature of the felonies involved and the impact of this case on all parties.
Judd remarked on the unfortunate turn of events, stating that what began as a neighborhood celebration ended in tragedy with a young man’s death and arrests of individuals living illegally in the country.
Reports indicate that police have responded on multiple occasions to complaints about large parties or gatherings at the Willow Oak Mobile Home Park. However, it remains unclear whether this particular group of partygoers has faced prior scrutiny from law enforcement or if similar incidents have occurred in the past at this location.
The neighborhood, known for its close-knit environment, now lives under the shadow of this tragic incident. Residents express concern regarding safety and the implications of such an event occurring within their community.
The Polk County case highlights broader issues tied to illegal immigration and the legal ramifications tied to such circumstances. As this investigation unfolds, law enforcement agencies will likely continue to address the intersection of crime and immigration in their operations.
