Renowned country artist John Rich is jumping into the political arena as Tennessee gears up for its special election. His endorsement of state Rep. Jody Barrett adds star power to an already competitive GOP primary race.
Rich, one-half of the famous duo Big & Rich, is supporting his longtime friend Barrett, who is vying to replace former Homeland Security Committee Chair Mark Green in the Tennessee’s 7th Congressional District. The election is expected to be a pivotal moment, with a crowded field of candidates seeking the Republican nomination.
In an exclusive interview with Fox News Digital, Rich remarked on his deep-rooted friendship with Barrett. He stated, “I’ve known Jody since we were seniors in high school and even graduated from the same school.” Their long-standing relationship has evolved substantially, especially in recent years as Barrett has held a position in the Tennessee legislature.
Rich and Barrett collaborated on various initiatives during Barrett’s tenure as a state representative, combining Rich’s wide-reaching public platform with Barrett’s inside knowledge of the political landscape. “Jody and I would unify our efforts to enact positive change in our community,” Rich explained.
Barrett is one of 10 Republicans seeking to succeed Green in the primary scheduled for October 7. The general election will take place on December 2. In a district that Trump decisively won by over 20 points in 2024, the winner of the GOP primary is likely to secure victory in the general election.
Earlier this week, Barrett, along with fellow candidates state Rep. Gino Bulso, state Rep. Lee Reeves, and former Tennessee General Services Commissioner Matt Van Epps, participated in a debate organized by Americans for Prosperity Tennessee. The candidates had the opportunity to present their platforms to voters.
Rich’s support for Barrett extends beyond campaign appearances. He has also made efforts to bring Barrett to the attention of notable figures, including Trump himself. Rich stated, “I’ve reached out to the President a few times about Jody, suggesting he would want him in Congress. I hope President Trump acknowledges this race either before or after the primary phase.”
Despite their common ground on many issues, Barrett recently diverged from Trump’s initiatives, notably regarding Operation Warp Speed, which focused on the COVID-19 vaccine. During the debate, Barrett referred to the fallout of the mandate, stating, “Millions of Americans now struggle with vaccine-related injuries.” His comments indicate a willingness to challenge party orthodoxy, which Rich appreciates.
Rich expressed his admiration for Barrett’s approach to conservatism, emphasizing the importance of standing up not only to the Democratic party but also to fellow Republicans when necessary. He said, “True conservatives call out mistakes within their own ranks, while many on the left simply conform to party directives.” Rich believes Barrett’s willingness to challenge both parties regarding important issues sets him apart.
Barrett’s consistency and authenticity resonate with Rich, who added, “When it comes to identifying a true conservative, I think of Jody. Knowing someone for so long and seeing them maintain their core values is rare.” This long-term relationship lends credibility to Rich’s endorsement and reflects a shared commitment to conservative principles.
The House Freedom Fund, aligned with the House Freedom Caucus, has also endorsed Barrett, further elevating his profile in the race. The organization focuses on candidates who demonstrate a strong conservative record. As Allison Weisenberger, a representative from the House Freedom Fund, stated, “Jody Barrett’s leadership in standing up against Democrats and occasionally against the RINOs embodies what we look for in our candidates.”
Reflecting on his endorsements, Barrett expressed his gratitude towards Rich, calling him a cherished friend and a titan of country music. “John Rich is not just a musical icon; he represents the values of Tennesseans and unwavering support for our conservative beliefs,” Barrett remarked. This strong backing from a popular figure like Rich could greatly enhance Barrett’s visibility in the race.
The combination of Rich’s influential platform and Barrett’s determination and experience makes this congressional race one to watch. With strong opinions on various issues in play, voters in Tennessee’s 7th Congressional District will have significant choices ahead of the upcoming primary. Ultimately, Rich believes that Barrett’s candidacy will resonate with constituents, showcasing a blend of long-held values and a commitment to addressing current issues facing the community.
