As a mother of two, Michaels adopted her daughter, Lukensia, in 2012, and her son, Phoenix, was born that same year to her then-fiancée, Heidi Rhoades.

“I received an invitation to speak at Turning Point USA during the Student Action Summit. Honestly, I was surprised to receive that invitation. I thought, why would they want me to speak? I don’t fully align with their narrative. My views are generally more centrist, but I genuinely respect Charlie Kirk, even if we differ on various topics,” she explained.

Michaels shared that when she informed her son about the opportunity, his excitement was palpable. He was on vacation with his other mom when she broached the subject, and the excitement was contagious.

“I told him, ‘You know I’ll be working all week. You’ll need to travel alone to get to L.A., then to Miami, and finally fly to Tampa with Uncle G, my business partner.’ It was going to be quite the undertaking, involving three flights. I feared he might think it was too complicated to manage,” she recalled.

Yet, her son responded with determination, stating he would do whatever it took to be there. He completed all three flights and participated fully in the event, which took place over three days.

During the event, Michaels had the opportunity to film a podcast with Kirk on the final day. Despite Kirk’s fatigue from a long event, he made a special effort to connect with her son, illustrating his dedication and warmth.

“I asked Charlie, ‘Would you mind saying hello to my 13-year-old? He is such a fan, and I hate to bother you when I’m sure you’re tired.’ He responded instantly, ‘Absolutely. Where is he?’” she recounted. This moment created a lasting memory for her son, who had traveled extensively to meet his idol.

Interestingly, Michaels revealed her children became aware of Kirk through social media, and they often joke that they introduced him to her. “They insist that I discovered Charlie through them, which isn’t quite correct. Regardless, my son connected deeply with Kirk’s message, resonating strongly with young boys navigating today’s cultural landscape,” she added.

“Charlie had a remarkable way of reaching young boys, encouraging them to rise above a culture that often undermines them. He inspired them to become better husbands, boyfriends, sons, and fathers. Seeing my son embrace that message offers me a sense of hope and encouragement. To my surprise, I learned only last night that my daughter admires him too,” Michaels stated.

Tragically, Kirk lost his life at the age of 31 in a violent incident during a Turning Point USA event held at Utah Valley University. He dedicated his life to visiting college campuses across the country, engaging students in critical political discussions.

In sharing a heartfelt memory, Phoenix conveyed a message to his mother that he wished to pass along to Kirk. This reflection showcased the strong emotional connection her son felt toward Kirk’s teachings.

“My son asked me to say happy birthday to Charlie since his birthday is next month. When I was reporting the news last night, he said, ‘Mom, can you please wish him happy birthday?’ His birthday is on October 14th, and I hadn’t had a chance to convey that due to the circumstances,” Michaels recounted.

“So, Charlie, from my son, happy early birthday. Also, to your family, I can’t begin to imagine your pain and shock. I am deeply horrified. If there’s any way for me to repay the kindness and grace your father and husband showed my son, it would truly be an honor to do so,” she concluded.
