Mötley Crüe frontman Vince Neil recently revealed the life-altering health scare that paused the band’s activities. The celebrated rocker suffered a stroke last Christmas, leaving his entire left side paralyzed. In an exclusive interview with the Las Vegas Review-Journal, Neil opened up about his experience and his determination to return to the stage.
On the night of December 25, Neil felt perfectly healthy. However, the following morning brought a shocking turn of events as he struggled to get out of bed and realized he could not move his left side. Neil stated, “I had a stroke. My whole left side went out.” The severity of his condition led doctors to doubt his ability to walk again.
Despite the grim prognosis, Neil remained resolute. He expressed, “The doctors said they didn’t think I’d be able to go back on stage again. I go, ‘No, no, I’m gonna do it. Watch and see.’” This determination marked the beginning of a challenging road to recovery. Neil acknowledged that his rehabilitation required immense effort, but he was unwilling to give up.
During Neil’s recovery phase, Mötley Crüe made the decision to postpone their concert dates. Neil remarked, “Mötley canceled the first part of the residency so I could get better.” The band pushed back their Las Vegas residency dates from spring to fall, emphasizing that the schedule change was essential for Neil’s recovery after discussions with his medical team.
Following the stroke, Neil engaged in various physical therapy sessions. From his home in Nashville, he embarked on regaining mobility. He reminisced about his initial struggles, saying, “I went from people carrying me to the bathroom, because I couldn’t walk myself, finally to a wheelchair.” Over time, he progressed to using a walker and then a cane, eventually reaching a point where he no longer required any assistance.
Neil described the complexity of retraining his brain and body. He stated, “It takes a while to get your brain to start moving your legs, for them to do what your brain wants to do. You try to walk, but it doesn’t come out right.” This mental block added another layer of difficulty to his recovery journey.
Neil’s recovery involved intense workouts, including sessions with a football coach. Despite the challenges, he demonstrated resilience. Reflecting on his progress, he shared, “I’m back, I’m 90-, 95-percent to where I was before, and it’s going to be great.” His words illustrate a powerful message of hope and determination.
In August, Neil made his long-awaited return to live performances at the MGM Music Hall at Fenway in Boston alongside famed musician Bret Michaels. This performance marked a significant milestone in his recovery journey. Just recently, Neil and the rest of Mötley Crüe successfully kicked off their rescheduled Las Vegas residency.
As he prepared for the show, Neil expressed excitement about the extensive setlist, noting, “The show’s setlist is extensive, with some deep cuts, but the songs that fans want to hear.” During the performance, the band played numerous hits, including beloved tracks like “Dr. Feelgood,” “Kickstart My Heart,” and “Girls, Girls, Girls.” Neil conveyed his enthusiasm, stating, “It takes you through the full Mötley Crüe lifestyle. I am going to push through the best I can.”
Vince Neil’s journey from a debilitating stroke to standing again on stage highlights not only determination but the power of community support. Both his personal resolve and the encouragement from his bandmates serve as elements that fuel his recovery.
As Neil steps back into the limelight, he reminds us that setbacks can often become setups for comebacks. His story, marked by overcoming adversity, is one that resonates with many who face their own battles with health and recovery.
