American veterans are making a significant impact on humanitarian efforts in Gaza while navigating dangers posed by Hamas.
Amid a prolonged and complex conflict, veterans accompanying the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) are shedding light on the realities faced by aid workers in the region. Jason Murray, Scott Weimer, and Brandon Zielinski, all U.S. military veterans, aim to ensure that Palestinians in Gaza receive essential food supplies.
During interviews with Fox News Digital, these men expressed pride in their roles assisting those in need. Murray reflected on their journey, stating, “We kind of built a plane in flight, not even knowing where we were going to land.” This metaphor illustrates the unforeseen challenges they encountered while establishing their operational framework.
GHF’s Mission and Early Operations

Weimer discussed how he felt an intrinsic motivation to contribute once the opportunity arose, describing it as a “natural fit.” His military background has enabled him to excel in coordinating aid distribution efficiently. Together with Murray, they leverage their skills to identify and place personnel in positions where they can be most effective.
During his military tenure, Zielinski experienced extensive bilateral training that required navigating language barriers. This training has proven invaluable in his current interactions with the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), which collaborates with GHF.
The Danger of Operating in Gaza
All three veterans shared alarming observations regarding the desperation of hungry Palestinians striving for food assistance. They also highlighted the challenges from malicious actors exploiting the crisis, including Hamas militants and gang members working to intimidate GHF personnel, especially the local Palestinian volunteers.
Murray provided insights into the security measures enforced by the IDF and GHF to deter bad actors. He reiterated, “From a security standpoint, our goal is to provide aid in a safe and secure manner. Hamas does operate in this area, and we know that.” This acknowledgment reflects the reality that GHF personnel must navigate daily threats.
Weimer echoed Murray’s concerns, stating that although the presence of Hamas is palpable, the focus remains steadfastly on delivering aid to those in dire situations. He particularly praised Zielinski and his team for their ability to manage security threats effectively while meeting urgent needs.
“They are amazing because the amount of people that are seeking food and seeking aid can be overwhelming at times. I have never seen any of us overreact to what would be, I think, a very scary situation,” Weimer emphasized.
Security Briefings and Distribution Challenges
Prior to commencing their operations, Zielinski’s team typically receives security briefings from the IDF. This protocol helps them understand the threats they may face during their shifts. Zielinski noted that he has observed notable changes in secure distribution sites over time, driven by the evolving dangers in the region.
In his accounts, Zielinski mentioned witnessing various weapons, including pistols and AK-47s. He addressed the chaotic circumstances they sometimes endure, such as when grenades have detonated during operations. Understanding security patterns is crucial, as they gather and report intelligence to identify potential threats.
He explained, “We’ll see down the line that, okay, we’ve seen this person before, he looked very suspicious, and next thing you know, this is a guy that has a pistol on him.” This process showcases their proactive approach to ensuring safety while maintaining aid distribution.
Raising Awareness About the Situation in Gaza
When asked how Americans can better comprehend the realities on the ground in Gaza, each veteran emphasized the significance of research. Weimer articulated his frustration regarding media portrayals of GHF, citing them as grossly inaccurate. He urged his family to avoid succumbing to sensationalized narratives and expressed disappointment in how their honorable service is represented.
“What I would tell the American people is these military veterans have lived long, honorable lives, and we would never align ourselves with something that I’ve seen in the media. It sickens me how far askew it is,” Weimer stated passionately.
Zielinski highlighted the unwavering dedication of GHF volunteers, underscoring their commitment to assisting civilians amid the turmoil. This organization is driven by a mission to alleviate suffering wherever possible.
GHF’s Impact Despite Adversity
Since commencing its mission, GHF has reportedly delivered over 160 million meals to Palestinians in need. Operating in a challenging environment, the organization continues to persevere despite facing security threats and international criticism. GHF remains resolute in calling on the international community to support its mission to feed the vulnerable.
