House Democrats Oppose Increased Penalties for Illegal Immigrants
Close to 200 House Democrats voted against a recent legislative effort to heighten criminal penalties targeting illegal immigrants. This opposition came during a critical vote on a bill known as the Stop Illegal Entry Act, led by Representative Stephanie Bice, a Republican from Oklahoma.
The bill aims to impose stricter consequences for individuals entering the United States illegally as well as those who commit felonies following such entry. It passed the House with a vote count of 226 to 197 just before lawmakers departed Washington for their weekend recess.

House Majority Whip Tom Emmer, a Republican from Minnesota and the No. 3 House GOP leader, criticized the Democrats who rejected the bill. He claimed that House Democrats continue to follow the lead of President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, highlighting a narrative of failure in managing border security.
Emmer stated, “The fact that Democrats voted against commonsense penalties for people entering our nation illegally demonstrates they’ve learned nothing since November. They continue to double down on their pro-illegal alien, anti-American agenda.” He emphasized the potency of border security and immigration issues for the Republican Party heading into the 2024 election.
Broad Support Among Moderates
Despite the overwhelming opposition from House Democrats, some moderate members voiced their support for the proposed legislation. Representative Laura Gillen, a Democrat from New York, described the bill as a commonsense approach in a statement to the media. Gillen asserted, “Americans overwhelmingly agree that violent criminals without legal status have no place in our country and should be held accountable to the full extent of our nation’s immigration laws.”
