This article presents insights inspired by the author’s experiences growing up in a bi-cultural household, exploring the relationship between immigration, identity, and contemporary political issues.
When President Trump ordered the deployment of National Guardsmen to address crime in Memphis, he aimed to tackle what he termed ‘savagery’ threatening American society. Many citizens understand the urgency behind such measures, yet Democratic leaders frequently criticize both the president and his supporters who seek firm law enforcement. This reflects a broader perception that the modern Democratic Party often diverges from traditional American values.
The past few years of the Biden administration have seen a rise in crime rates, linked to the Democrats’ downplaying of public safety concerns. As videos of riots and looting circulated widely, Americans were left shocked and searching for answers. Why did these incidents erupt across the nation?
The underlying causes of this disorder are complex but rooted in political narratives. Since 2020, the Democrats have participated in a public discourse that often portrays systemic racism as a primary cause of violence, suggesting that police disproportionately target Black Americans. This narrative has, in some cases, resulted in justifying criminal behavior under the banner of ‘equity.’ Subsequently, many representatives in Democratic-run jurisdictions supported policies that effectively legalized theft and hindered prosecutions for violent offenders, complicating the quest for safety.
The events and policies shaping these debates are explored in depth in the author’s new book. Through this lens, one can observe a party that increasingly rejects the principles of unity, law, and security traditionally valued by Americans. A robust democracy flourishes on adherence to the rule of law and mutual respect among its citizens. Unfortunately, there is a growing sentiment among some Democrats that these tenets no longer hold meaning.
Today’s perspective within parts of the Democratic Party seems less about building a cohesive American identity and more about highlighting perceived faults in the nation’s history. It often focuses on emphasizing divisions based on race, gender, and background rather than fostering a sense of shared purpose.
Despite being the child of a Mexican immigrant, my cultural identity has always been rooted in American ideals. My mother, who immigrated from Mexico during her teenage years, instilled strong values about assimilation and patriotism in her children. Going back to my childhood, she often shared her belief that learning Spanish might inhibit our ability to fully embrace our American identity. This conviction shaped how my sister and I interacted with culture.
My mother’s immigration story, from her initial arrival in California to her eventual naturalization in the 1980s, mirrors the aspirations of many who seek a better life in America. She met my father, a U.S. Marine, at a time when they both worked at the same military base. It was through his encouragement that she pursued American citizenship, experiencing firsthand the opportunities this nation can offer.
Her perspective was not just an abstract understanding of American values but was deeply personal. She held strong views against foreign nationals who displayed their home country flags, expressing the belief that it was a sign of disrespect to the United States. This fervent patriotism, characterized by deep appreciation and loyalty, has significantly influenced my own views.
While my mother’s educational background consisted primarily of high school education, her intelligence and insights about America shaped her worldview profoundly. She could see the vast opportunities the country provided, contrasting with her experiences in Mexico, and her gratitude fueled her passion for American principles. Disrespect towards these ideals ignites a fire within her.
Similarly, my father shares this sentiment, albeit in a quieter manner. My own experiences have also led me to recognize the uniqueness of America. I am not a scholar of history, but I have traveled and seen what life is like in other parts of the world. The comforts and freedoms that exist in America are, indeed, extraordinary.
Although I appreciate my heritage, such as enjoying Mexican cuisine and music, I firmly identify as an American. I remember a childhood experience at a Hispanic festival, where a well-meaning man pushed me to engage in a soccer game—a sport I had little familiarity with. To him, it was an expected aspect of my culture; to me, it highlighted my life in a predominantly American setting.
Listening to my mother’s stories and lessons instilled a pride for this nation within me. Growing up in the United States has been an opportunity, one I recognize as a significant advantage compared to what many face globally.
The privilege of being born in the United States feels like winning the lottery of life. It is a gift that demands respect and vigilance. As debates rage about national identity and values, one must remember that true patriotism lies in honoring the laws, customs, and sacrifices made by previous generations.
As the conversation continues about America’s future and the values that shape it, a renewed focus on unity and mutual respect becomes vital. The need for collective appreciation of American ideals transcends partisan politics. There remains hope for a future where understanding and dialogue can bridge the growing divides.
In this evolving narrative, we must remain steadfast in recognizing what makes America extraordinary. Whether through the lens of an immigrant story or the reflections of a native-born citizen, it is essential to celebrate the values that unify rather than divide.
As we navigate these complex times, challenges can serve as catalysts for growth and deeper understanding. Americans of all backgrounds can come together to forge a path that honors the past while nurturing a future defined by shared principles and respect. By embracing our collective identity, we enhance the strong foundations that have long made America a beacon of hope and opportunity.
