Grant Harrold, who served as King Charles III’s butler for seven years, has expressed surprise at the claims made by Prince Harry in his memoir, Spare. Harrold provided insights during an interview with Fox News Digital, emphasizing the discrepancies between Harry’s recollections and his own experiences while working closely with the royal family.
In his memoir, The Royal Butler: My Remarkable Life in Royal Service, Harrold recounts his interactions with King Charles and Queen Camilla. He discusses the stark contrasts between his memories and those relayed by Harry, particularly regarding family dynamics. According to Harrold, Harry’s portrayal in Spare left him perplexed.
“I’ve openly talked about this because his memories and mine are very different,” Harrold explained. “You would think we were in two different households. I talked about a happy family, including his stepmother, while he claims otherwise. I never witnessed any unhappiness.”
Harrold recalls memories from a wedding event where Prince Harry appeared to be enjoying himself alongside his stepmother. He remarked, “When you look at the photos of Harry around his stepmother, both leaving Windsor excitedly, that’s not someone who seems unhappy. If he were truly unhappy, he would not have participated in family events like weddings.”
In addition to family gatherings, Harrold described his presence during another occasion—a dinner attended by Harry, his brother William, and King Charles. He characterized the atmosphere as pleasant, devoid of any evident issues.
A spokesperson for Archewell, the foundation established by the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, has refrained from commenting on Harrold’s revelations. This silence has stirred further speculation about the authenticity of Harry’s experiences versus those of the individuals who knew him well.
Harry’s memoir delves into his contentious relationship with Prince William as well as the traumatic loss of their mother, Princess Diana. The memoir includes impactful events from their childhood, like the announcement of their mother’s tragic accident, a moment overshadowed by a lack of compassion from their father.
Moreover, Harry disclosed that both he and his brother had reservations about their father’s marriage to Camilla, fearing she would assume the role of a “wicked stepmother.”
While discussing mental health, Harrold underscored that appearances can be deceiving. “With mental health issues, individuals often suffer in silence,” he acknowledged. However, he emphasized that during his tenure at the palace, he never perceived Harry as unhappy.
As Harrold noted, “It’s entirely possible Harry felt pressured to maintain a public facade. But from what I saw, there were no indications that he was suffering or grappling with any form of mental health struggles.”
“My memories are definitely very different from his,” Harrold stated, suggesting that both experiences were shaped by unique perspectives. This contrast echoes the sentiments expressed by the late Queen Elizabeth II, who famously remarked that ‘recollections may vary.’
Harrold invites readers to explore his memoir alongside historical newspapers and footage, implying that a broader understanding of past events will offer clarity regarding his claims versus Harry’s assertions.
In interviews preceding the release of Spare, Prince Harry made serious allegations against Camilla, describing her as excessively media-savvy, to the extent of compromising personal family communications for public perception.
Harry expressed concern, stating, “There was open willingness on both sides to trade information. With her moving towards being queen consort, it raised the stakes; there would be people left in the wake of this situation.”
Reflecting on his time with the royal family, Harrold described King Charles as a caring father who sought to nurture his sons following their mother’s untimely death. Contrary to public perception, Harrold painted a picture of a father who was far more engaged than many might assume.
He recounted instances where Charles and Camilla made efforts to provide a sense of normalcy as they navigated their parental roles, particularly after the death of Princess Diana in 1997.
Both princes, according to Harrold, drew influences from the diverse parenting styles of their parents, shaping their personalities in distinct ways. He observed, “William’s shyness might come from his mother, while Harry’s resilience could reflect traits inherited from his grandfather, Prince Philip.”
Despite the differing narratives that have emerged, Harrold remains grateful for his time working at the royal palace, cherishing the personal interactions he had with each member of the family.
Reflecting on King Charles’ personality, Harrold remarked on the down-to-earth nature of the king. He stated, “People often misconstrue what royals are like, but I found them to be exactly as I had hoped. They are discernibly normal, despite the plethora of media portrayals that can often skew perceptions.”
