A Pennsylvania woman has been charged following a shocking discovery made by police. Authorities found the remains of four infants hidden in a closet and attic of a residence from which she had been evicted last month.

Jessica Marie Mauthe, 39, was taken into custody after her former landlord reported a foul odor emanating from the home located outside Ford City, approximately 40 miles northeast of Pittsburgh.

Initial Discovery Leads to Investigation

Brent Flanigan, the landlord, explained to local news outlet WTAE-TV that he had the police remove Mauthe due to nonpayment of rent on August 14. Subsequently, as he began cleaning the vacant property, he stumbled upon a trash bag nestled in a closet. To his horror, the bag emitted a strong, unpleasant smell and contained something wrapped in towels that appeared to be decomposing, according to the arrest affidavit filed on Thursday.

Search Uncovers Additional Remains

Upon further investigation, law enforcement officials scoured the home and uncovered the bodies of three additional infants stored in tote bags. These remains were also wrapped in towels and sealed within plastic bags, as reported by police.

Local resident Carmen Felix expressed her disbelief and distress over the incident, stating, “Shocked. No one believed it. It’s just evil.” She continued, “How can you plop babies in the toilet? The girl across from here is a nurse, and she’s sick. She almost didn’t go to work today because she can’t get this off her mind.” This sentiment reflects the community’s shock and horror at the horrific event.

Mauthe narrated her experiences to investigators, recalling an incident about a year ago when she gave birth to a child who made several noises before she held the infant close. She described keeping the child against her until the noises ceased and the baby stopped breathing.

During the police interrogation, Mauthe stated that one newborn whimpered shortly after birth six years ago. In a vulnerable moment, she recounted fainting on the floor. When she regained consciousness, she found the baby beneath her and lifeless.
