Robert Wagner Reflects on the Grief of Losing Natalie Wood and Supporting His Stepdaughter

Robert Wagner once doubted that his stepdaughter, Natasha Gregson Wagner, could cope with the overwhelming grief following the tragic death of her mother, the iconic actress Natalie Wood. It turns out, Natasha shared that sentiment.

Natalie Wood, celebrated for her performances in timeless classics such as West Side Story, Rebel Without a Cause, and Miracle on 34th Street, drowned on November 29, 1981. That fateful night, she was aboard a yacht alongside Wagner, fellow actor Christopher Walken, and the yacht’s captain during a Thanksgiving weekend getaway.

After a night filled with drinking, Wood’s body was discovered floating in the waters off Catalina Island. She was just 43 years old.

At the time of her mother’s passing, Gregson Wagner was only 11 years old. In a moment of deep reflection, she recalled telling herself, “If I don’t deal with this, it will kill me, so I’m going to deal with it.” This resolve would guide her through the difficult years ahead.

Now 95, Robert Wagner has played a pivotal role in raising Gregson Wagner, alongside her sisters, Katie and Courtney. Natasha shared her father’s pride in her with People magazine, revealing his heartfelt words: “He always told me that he never thought I would make it when my mom died because I was so close to her. He’s always amazed that I am, in fact, totally OK.”

Despite the long and arduous journey towards healing, Gregson Wagner expressed newfound strength, stating, “It was hard for me to find my strength for a long time, but now I do feel it.”

Keeping Natalie Wood’s Legacy Alive

Throughout the years, Gregson Wagner has remained committed to preserving her late mother’s legacy. In 2020, she published a memoir titled More Than Love, which coincided with the release of the HBO documentary Natalie Wood: What Remains Behind. Additionally, she has recently reintroduced a fragrance line designed to honor her mother’s memory.

“Everything that happened was so public, but grief is so private,” she explained. “The truth is I do feel better when I talk about my grief.”

A Deep Family Bond

Reports indicate that Gregson Wagner and Robert Wagner share a close relationship. Wagner remarried Wood in 1972 when Natasha was only a toddler. Their initial marriage took place in 1957, but they divorced in 1962, a fact that continues to add complexity to their family dynamic.

“I have had a great life, but I was so broken at that moment,” Gregson Wagner reflected. “I think he feels like if he dies tomorrow, he knows I’m going to be OK, but I’ll miss him a lot.”

She further elaborated, “I think that grief is a lifetime of work, but the fragrance is just one little beautiful area of my life that is about beauty and something positive. It’s like alchemy, turning metal into gold. I turned my sadness and pain into beauty.”

Addressing the Accusations

Over the decades, Wagner has faced accusations regarding his potential involvement in Wood’s untimely death. In 2020, Gregson Wagner conveyed that her father was eager to participate in her documentary, aiming to clarify the events that transpired.

“I didn’t have to convince him at all,” she shared. “When I discussed our plans with him, he was immediately onboard. My dad really loved the filmmaker Laurent Bouzereau and felt completely safe sharing his memories and perspective.”

The Courage to Discuss Difficult Memories

Gregson Wagner views her father’s decision to revisit those bittersweet memories of Wood with immense courage. Their family firmly believes that Wagner, who has shown unwavering dedication to providing a nurturing upbringing, would never harm their mother. They assert that the incident that night was nothing short of a tragic accident.

“I am always blown away by his courage,” she stated. “Knowing him my whole life, I see him as such a brave person. I felt so proud of him. He was transparent, elegant, gracious, and present throughout the filming.”

“He was everything that I knew him to be, and being his daughter during this process was an incredible experience.”

The Enduring Mystery of Natalie Wood’s Death

For nearly four decades, speculation has clouded the circumstances surrounding Wood’s death. In 2022, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department announced that all leads in the investigation had been exhausted. They disclosed that Robert Wagner was no longer considered a person of interest.

As the family continues to navigate their grief, they remain focused on celebrating Wood’s lasting influence and the bond they share. Through love and resilience, they illustrate that even in the face of tragedy, hope and beauty can flourish.
