Chicago Cubs rookie Matt Shaw let his impressive performance speak volumes on Wednesday as he silenced critics who questioned his decision to attend the memorial service of conservative influencer Charlie Kirk.
Shaw delivered a stellar game, finishing 3-for-4 with a solo home run and scoring three runs during the Cubs’ emphatic 10-3 victory over the New York Mets. His performance may have significant implications as the Mets now find themselves in a precarious position within the National League Wildcard standings. With only four games left in the regular season, New York holds a slim one-game lead over the Cincinnati Reds for the last playoff spot.
Following the significant win, Shaw withdrew from speaking with reporters. The Cubs’ matchup against the Mets aired on ESPN, giving a night off to the regular SNY broadcaster team of Gary Cohen and Todd Zeile.
During the game, Cohen labeled Shaw’s choice to attend Kirk’s funeral at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, as “weird.”
He stated, “I don’t want to talk about any of the politics of it, but leaving your team for any reason other than a family emergency during a playoff race strikes me as odd.”
Supporting this sentiment, fellow Mets broadcaster Todd Zeile remarked on Shaw’s absence, calling it “unprecedented.”
