Addressing TikTok as a National Security Concern: Urgent Action Required from the Trump Administration

In 2020, the Trump administration took an important stance regarding the social media platform TikTok. The administration agreed with the unanimous determination by the Committee on Foreign Investment in the U.S. that TikTok poses a serious threat to national security. Officials labeled the app as spyware hidden behind a façade of entertainment, with propaganda elements camouflaging as news. At its core, TikTok is a highly addictive platform significantly influenced by the Chinese Communist Party.

Bipartisan Legislative Measures Emphasizing Accountability

Recognizing the potential dangers, Congress passed bipartisan legislation in 2024 urging that TikTok either be sold to American owners or face an outright ban. This decisive action highlighted the urgent need for accountability regarding apps linked to foreign entities. The Supreme Court, with its conservative majority, upheld this mandate, which left little room for misinterpretation: a clear choice between divestiture or a ban, with no alternatives available.

Inadequate Proposals from the Trump Administration

Despite this legislative clarity, the Trump administration appears to propose a framework deal that inadequately addresses the underlying issues. The proposal suggests allowing ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok, to retain a position on the board while leasing its algorithm to a consortium of American investors. Though this may initially sound like a reasonable compromise, in reality, it represents a significant concession.

Licensing does not equate to ownership, and mere oversight fails to ensure real control over the platform’s operations. By permitting ByteDance to maintain algorithmic influence from Beijing, the administration effectively allows the CCP to continue shaping and influencing American public opinion and behavior.

The Reality of Information Warfare

Evidence of TikTok’s capabilities to manipulate information is glaring. The app has been known to flood American feeds with divisive and harmful content, such as antisemitic rhetoric following recent terrorist attacks. Other critical narratives, like those discussing the Uyghur genocide or the Tiananmen Square incident, are conveniently suppressed.

Interestingly, the very algorithm distributing this toxic content in the United States is banned in China itself, demonstrating a troubling double standard. Allowing China continued influence over TikTok means fostering an information warfare environment detrimental to American youth and society.

Possible Outbreak of Chaos

In times of crisis, the stakes become even higher. Should tensions escalate, for example, over Taiwan, a retained Chinese control over TikTok could facilitate the spreading of pro-CCP messages. This would undermine the American public’s perception of the conflict by delivering misleading information and propagating disinformation campaigns aimed at sowing discord.

The Legislative and Judicial Consensus

The legislative action taken by Congress, alongside a supportive ruling from the courts, conveyed a unified message regarding the necessity of divestiture. However, the administration’s current attempts to reinterpret what divestiture means risk fundamentally weakening these crucial protections. This proposal faces criticism for transforming a robust requirement into something merely cosmetic, maintaining core technology under Chinese control.

Implications of Continued Concessions

The strategic consequences of such a deal are alarming. By endorsing this weakened approach, American policymakers signal that national security can be compromised for what amounts to half measures. Such precedence would encourage Beijing to pursue even more aggressive demands in future negotiations, whether trade-related or otherwise.

A Call for Stronger Action

The agreement presented lacks respect for the law and fails to prioritize the security of the American people. Instead, it risks preserving Chinese influence over a platform that could extensively shape youth perspectives. Comparing today’s situation with the Cold War, we recognize the absurdity of allowing a foreign power to influence local news narratives.

The current political landscape requires assertiveness rather than hesitance. Conservatives in Congress must not remain passive while this arrangement potentially undermines national security under the guise of compliance. TikTok’s status as a national security threat demands complete divestiture—no minority stakes, no algorithmic leases, and certainly no token concessions. Anything less than this represents a fundamental failure to uphold the law and offer protection against disinformation spread by foreign adversaries.

Protecting Sovereignty in the Digital Age

The time has come for leaders to act decisively and protect American sovereignty in the digital landscape. TikTok, as it currently operates, poses a significant risk, and a lack of decisive action may not just endanger security but also public discourse. The response needed now must align firmly with the original intent of Congress, emphasizing clear and effective solutions that shield American citizens from foreign manipulation.
