Country music star Raul Malo is grappling with a significant setback in his ongoing battle against cancer. The lead singer of The Mavericks recently announced that his condition has worsened, prompting the cancellation of most of their scheduled shows for 2025.
On a Wednesday social media post, the 60-year-old musician revealed that he was diagnosed with leptomeningeal disease, a rare complication associated with advanced cancer. This update comes after Malo disclosed his stage 4 colon cancer diagnosis in June 2024. According to specialists at the Cleveland Clinic, leptomeningeal disease occurs when cancer spreads to the cerebrospinal fluid as well as the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord, rendering it an incurable condition.
Malo stated that he had to make the difficult decision to cancel all of The Mavericks’ remaining tour dates for next year, with the exception of two shows in December. He emphasized the need to prioritize his health during this challenging time.
In his heartfelt Instagram update, Malo expressed his gratitude to fans while sharing his news. He acknowledged the emotional and physical toll of his cancer journey, stating, “I want to update you all on my health, as things have taken a turn,” while a video showed him playing guitar from a chair.
The diagnosis of leptomeningeal disease adds a complex layer to Malo’s already difficult fight against colon cancer. “As it goes with cancer, it’s a very unpredictable and indiscriminatory disease,” he remarked. The Grammy Award-winning artist elaborated on the challenges he faces, adding, “I’ve developed something called LMD, which stands for ‘get this s— out of my head.’ Treatment for this is radiation, which I will start tomorrow.”
In his post, Malo mentioned that alongside radiation therapy, he and his medical team would consider chemotherapy and alternative therapies. He acknowledged the necessity to listen to his body, stating, “it’s time to take your words to heart of resting and recovering, so that’s what I’m going to do.” His determination to focus on wellness indicates the serious nature of his current health challenges.
The cancellation of The Mavericks’ tour dates has saddened many fans who have followed the band throughout their career. Despite the cancellations, Malo reassured his supporters that the band would continue to engage with them through various projects, including live recordings and merchandise. “All shows going forward are canceled,” he confirmed, yet he hinted at exciting plans for two special shows at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium on December 5 and 6. He noted, “hang on to your tickets, as we’re planning something special and will share details soon.”
This year, The Mavericks had been touring alongside Dwight Yoakam’s Cosmic Roundup & Rodeo Tour, but had to postpone multiple dates due to Malo’s health challenges. Expressing gratitude, Malo praised Yoakam and his crew for their kindness and understanding during this difficult time. He sincerely regretted not completing the tour as initially planned.
Aside from his professional commitments, Malo reflected on the personal support he finds in his family and fans during this daunting chapter of his life. He commented on the love surrounding him, stating, “I have an amazing wife and boys, wonderful family, team, road crew, band, friends, and fans.” He expressed heartfelt thanks to those who have reached out, declaring, “I don’t even have enough words to describe the love and support that I’m getting right now.” This acknowledgment underscores the importance of community in times of adversity.
Moreover, Malo reassured his fans that he feels neither alone nor fearful in facing this battle. He recognizes the power of shared empathy and kindness, stating, “I want you to know that I’ve read them all,” in reference to the messages of support he has received. His words resonate with many who understand the emotional weight of such a struggle.
Malo also took time to reflect on his approach to battling cancer going forward. He articulated his intentions by saying, “We don’t know what this will look like a couple of months from now, but we are going into it like we have with everything else — full steam ahead. Fight, recover, rest, repeat.” His proactive stance mirrors the courage and tenacity he has displayed throughout his career, emphasizing a refusal to yield in the face of adversity.
The musician expressed his appreciation for supporters, conveying, “I want to thank you all for your incredible support through all this, and sorry about the cancellations, but we have no choice anymore.” His closing remarks encouraged others to find kindness and empathy wherever they can, reminding everyone that, even in difficult times, humanity can prevail. “Humans are alright, even if you don’t believe it from what you see on TV,” he added, reinforcing his belief in the goodness that can persist in the world.
