Jimmy Kimmel’s recent ratings surge was short-lived, highlighting the volatility of late-night television viewership.
Disney’s temporary suspension of ABC’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” came after Kimmel’s controversial remarks about the alleged assassin of Charlie Kirk led to widespread backlash. Upon his return last Tuesday, Kimmel’s emotional appeal attracted a considerable audience; however, the numbers have since dropped significantly.
On Thursday, the show averaged 2.3 million viewers, reflecting a staggering 64% decline from the 6.5 million who tuned in for the much-publicized return. This downturn raises questions about the sustainability of his viewership.
In addition to the overall viewership drop, the show experienced severe losses in key demographics crucial for advertisers. Among adults aged 25 to 54, Kimmel’s Thursday episode lost 73% of its initial audience, plummeting to just 465,000 viewers from 1.7 million during his comeback episode.
The younger demographic of adults aged 18 to 49 also dwindled dramatically. The show managed to attract 1.2 million on Tuesday, only to descend to 334,000 viewers by Thursday, marking a 73% decline.
The controversy originated earlier this month when Kimmel made claims that Tyler Robinson, the 22-year-old suspect in the assassination of Charlie Kirk, was associated with the “MAGA gang.” This assertion contradicted reports suggesting Robinson had leftist leanings, as reiterated in the indictment that followed.
During the segment, Kimmel commented, “We hit some new lows over the weekend with the MAGA gang desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them and doing everything they can to score political points from it.” This statement ignited considerable outrage, leading to scrutiny from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).
As a consequence of the uproar, Disney opted to suspend the show briefly. Nexstar and Sinclair subsequently decided to pull airings of Kimmel’s program from their stations. Reports indicate that Kimmel had told executives that he would not apologize for his comments regarding the assassination.
Disney’s suspension lasted less than a week, and Kimmel returned with a heartfelt monologue that resonated with some viewers, despite not issuing a comprehensive apology.
Over the past decade, “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” has experienced a consistent decline in viewership. The program averaged 2.4 million viewers in 2015, but the numbers have steadily decreased since then. Kimmel’s show recorded 2.2 million viewers in 2016 and 2017, dropped to 2.1 million in 2018, and fell further to 1.9 million in 2019. By 2020 and 2021, viewership dwindled to 1.5 million nightly, signaling a deeper trend of decline.
The average viewership for 2025 stood at 1.6 million, illustrating a 37% decrease from the 2015 figures, coinciding with his temporary suspension.
Meanwhile, supporters of Charlie Kirk have criticized Kimmel’s handling of the controversy, emphasizing his lack of accountability for the misinformation shared. Andrew Kolvet, a spokesperson for Turning Point USA, expressed disappointment, stating, “Kimmel is an unrepentant liar who tried to blame Charlie’s assassination on the part of the country that just spent the last two weeks praying and holding vigils.”
This incident serves as a poignant reminder of the delicate balance late-night hosts must maintain between comedy and political commentary. Kimmel’s experience raises questions about the future of his show and the broader implications for late-night programming in an increasingly polarized media landscape. As audiences demand accountability and authenticity, hosts may need to navigate their political humor more carefully to retain viewership.
The drastic ratings shift post-suspension not only impacts Kimmel’s program but also underscores the fragility of audience loyalty in today’s media landscape.
In an era where social media amplifies backlash, late-night hosts may need to reconsider their approach to controversial subjects and audiences’ reactions.
