The Department of Justice has initiated a lawsuit against the state of Minnesota regarding its sanctuary policies, which the Trump administration contends obstructs federal efforts to enforce immigration laws. This legal action underscores a growing conflict between state and federal authorities over immigration control.
Filed on Monday, the lawsuit targets the State of Minnesota, Hennepin County, Hennepin County Sheriff Dawanna S. Witt, Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison, as well as the cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul. Each of these defendants plays a significant role in the state’s immigration policy and enforcement.
The complaint asserts that sanctuary policies violate federal laws and contribute to public safety risks. It claims these policies facilitate the release of individuals described as dangerous criminals, including illegal immigrants convicted of serious offenses who would traditionally face removal from the U.S.
“Minnesota officials are jeopardizing the safety of their own citizens by allowing illegal aliens to circumvent the legal process,” stated Attorney General Pamela Bondi in a declaration. “This Department of Justice will continue to bring litigation against any jurisdiction that uses sanctuary policies to defy federal law and undermine law enforcement.”
