In a separate development, CBS News reported that the National Personnel Records Center, part of the National Archives and Records Administration, inadvertently released improperly redacted military personnel files of Sherrill. These files included sensitive information, such as her Social Security number, and were sent to an associate of Ciattarelli.

This unexpected release prompted demands from leading Democrats for an investigation into the matter, raising concerns over the integrity of the electoral process. Sherrill argued that her opponent’s campaign had crossed ethical boundaries by acquiring records through dubious means.
