The New York Mets entered the 2023 MLB season with a promising start, boasting a strong record of 45-24 at one point. However, the season ended on a disappointing note, with the team finishing at 83-79 and missing the postseason for another year.
Mo Vaughn, a former MLB star and American League MVP, shared insights with Fox News Digital regarding the reasons behind the Mets’ collapse this year. Vaughn highlighted the impact of the 2022 season, in which the Mets reached the National League Championship Series, and how that may have affected their performance this year.
According to Vaughn, fatigue from the previous season could have played a significant role. “They went all the way to the league championship series last year. They knew how to do that. They knew how to get there. And what happens is that you spend a lot of energy getting to that point. Now you’re reset. You got another season, but you’re not as sharp,” he explained.
This lapse in focus could be attributed to several factors, including the high expectations that followed the team’s previous success. Vaughn stated that achieving such a milestone requires immense concentration and dedication. “If you have that opportunity to get there, you’re going to turn it on. And that’s what I felt about the Mets,” he added.
Vaughn pointed out that just one more win would have changed the Mets’ fate, enabling them to surpass the Cincinnati Reds and secure a playoff spot. “They lacked the fine-tuned concentration to get there,” he remarked, emphasizing the need for a renewed focus.
“They just have to reconvene, reconfigure their brains,” Vaughn continued. He reassured fans that the team did not lack effort, stating, “It’s not that you’re not taking it seriously. I want fans to understand. It’s not like anybody was lollygagging or not playing harder. It just needed that fine-tuned concentration to get yourself to the playoffs.”
As the Mets prepare for the upcoming spring training, Vaughn believes a change in mentality will be essential. He remarked, “I think now what’s going to happen is they’re going to go back to spring training. And they’ve had that year where they didn’t make it. They’re going to be thinking about the year that they did make it, and now they’re going to go about the business of everything matters.”
This shift in outlook could prove crucial for the team’s future success. Vaughn emphasized, “When everything matters, that’s when you get the best baseball that’s played. But they’ll learn it, they’ll get there. They’re too talented. They’ve got too many guys who know how to play.”
Another bright spot for the Mets this season was the performance of Juan Soto, who Vaughn praised for having an impressive first year with the team. “There’s a lot of hype around being the highest-paid player. You’ve got that whole Yankee Mets rivalry. Why did he go? Where did he go? Did he stay? He should have stayed. But, everybody should kick back and let this guy do his work,” Vaughn expressed.
Vaughn acknowledged that Soto’s initial adjustment to the team may have been challenging. “You kind of feel like you’re in a little fog, not sure where you are. But once he got his feet on the ground, he was the best guy out there,” he stated. The statistics confirm this, with Soto achieving 40 home runs, 30 stolen bases, and over 100 walks and RBIs.
In total, Soto played 160 games with a .283 batting average, 43 home runs, 105 RBIs, and 38 stolen bases, which led the National League. His on-base percentage of .396 also led the league, showcasing his prowess at the plate. However, despite these impressive individual statistics, the Mets fell short of securing a postseason berth.
Vaughn, who enjoyed a 12-year career in Major League Baseball, spent time with the Boston Red Sox, Anaheim Angels, and Mets. This three-time All-Star boasts a career batting average of .293, with a remarkable 328 home runs and 1,064 RBIs. In addition to his insights on the Mets, Vaughn is also a podcaster, having launched “The Mo Vaughn Podcast” in August. His guests include notable figures such as former MLB commissioner Bud Selig and six-time All-Star Kenny Lofton.
Insights into the Mets’ disappointment this season provide valuable lessons for both the team and its fans. As they look to regroup and refocus, the hope remains that New York can return to postseason glory in the future.
